Grateful Dead – 1994-07-20 – Deer Creek Amphitheater, Noblesville, IN [SBD]
This catches the Grateful Dead in the summer of 1994, when the band, unfortunately, was nearing its end. Garcia was in failing health, and often had difficulties staying focused when playing live. Yet, they could still make some nights magical. This soundboard recording from July 20, 1994, for example, finds the band playing Childhoods End and Matilda, a song once recorded by Harry Belafonte, for the very first time. On January 19, 1994, The Grateful Dead are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Bruce Hornsby makes the induction speech, Jerry Garcia does not attend the ceremonies so the band brings a life size cardboard cutout of him!
Garcia’s health continues to fail, making playing live more and more difficult for him. Despite Garcia’s issues, the band grosses over $50 million in North America from touring in 1994, their largest revenue year. No live shows from 1994 have been officially released. This show is an excellent show, and one of the better 1994 performances the Dead managed, and the sound quality is great!
Govt Mule – 1995-09-12 – Chester’s, Fayetteville, AR [SBD]
In 1994, Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody of The Allman Brothers Band launched a side project called Govt Mule. Haynes and Woody were fans of power trios such as Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, recruited Matt Abts to handle the drums. The new band, affectionately known to its fans as The Mule, released their self titled debut album in October 1995. This soundboard recording captures The Mule just about a month before the release of that disc, on September 12, 1995, at Chester’s, in Fayetteville. AR. Check this one out to hear Govt Mule in it’s early days, when some people, including myself say that was when the band was at it’s best. The band is still together and touring to this day, but now is not a power trio, and instead has Warren Haynes (guitar), Matt Abts (drums), Danny Louis (keyboards), and Jorgen Carlsson (bass). Catch ’em live, or buy a Mule CD today!
