This broadcast continues our journey to the Rockin’ Seventies….

Foghat – 1976 – King Biscuit Flower Hour [FM]

Foghat is an English rock band formed in London in 1971 by members Dave Peverett (“Lonesome Dave”) on guitar and Foghat - King Biscuit Flower Hour frontvocals, Tony Stevens on bass, and Roger Earl on drums when they split from Savoy Brown in 1970.  Rod Price on guitar/slide guitar joined the band after he left the Black Cat Bones in December 1970.  Their debut 1972 album, Foghat, had a cover of Willie Dixon’s “I Just Want to Make Love to You“, which received heavy FM play rotation.  There were several under appreciated tracks on this initial album, including a remake of the Savoy Brown bluesy tune, “Leavin’ Again (Again!)” and “Sarah Lee“, a classic blues burner with a truly inspirational slide solo by Rod Price.   This concert was recorded Foghat-King-Biscuit-1976-Back-Coverfor and played on the King Biscuit Flower Hour in 1976 with the original band lineup, touring in support of the 1976 album, Night Shift.  It also includes a couple bonus tracks from 1974 as well.  This was truly Foghat at their best. The band has achieved 8 gold records, one platinum and one double platinum record, and continues to record and perform to the present day, despite several lineup changes.

Boston – 1977.03.19 – Long Beach Arena, Long Beach, CA, King Biscuit Flower Hour [FM]

Boston is an American rock band from Boston, MA that achieved their most notable successes during the Boston-LB-77-frontseventies and eighties.  Centered on guitarist, keyboardist, songwriter and producer Tom Scholz, the band is a staple of classic rock radio playlists.  Boston‘s best known works include the songs More Than a Feeling, Piece of Mind, Foreplay/Long Time, Rock and Roll Band, Smokin’, Don’t Look Back and Amanda.  They have sold over 31 million albums in the United States, of which 17 million were from their self-titled debut album and 7 million from their second album, Don’t Look Back.  Scholz actually started writing music in 1969 while attending MIT.  Boston-LB-77-backAfter graduating with a masters degree, he worked at Poloroid, and used his salary to build a studio in his basement.  He created a series of demo songs, with him playing all instruments instead of drums.  He signed a record deal, but had to do a live demo, so hurriedly put together a performing unit capable of reproducing the demos.  This concert was at the height of their popularity, and was recorded for the KBFH at Long Beach Arena, Long Beach, CA.

Derek and the Dominos – 1970.10.23 – Fillmore East, New York [HQ-AUD]

The Yardbirds.  Cream.  Blind Faith.  Delaney and Bonnie and Friends.  Eric Clapton has had historic turns with each of derek 10-23-1970 frontthose bands, not to mention an astounding solo career.  Yet, no moment in that legacy can top his brief time fronting Derek and the Dominos in 1970.  Sure, the band had only 1 album, but it just happened to be one of the finest in rock and roll history.  Slowhand, fueled by his unrequited love for Patti Harrison, and driven to play at his best by the presence of Duane Allman, produced his masterpiece, the 2 record set known as Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs.  After completing the album, the band toured the U.S. from October to December 1970, then Clapton went into a drug-induced exile for 3 years.  1970-10-23-fillmore-backFor those of us too young to see the Dominos live, CRAB fortunately has soundboard recordings of both of their October shows at the legendary Fillmore East.  This concert is the second show.  It’s a slightly different set list than the previous show, but what’s amazing is that neither night features Layla or Bell Bottom Blues, the 2 most well known songs from the album!  Classic versions of songs such as Let It Rain, Little Wing, and Got To Get Better In A Little While more than make up for these omissions.

Foghat – 1980-07-18 – Chicago

Foghat is a British rock band, formed in London in 1971, best described as blues rock.  The band featured Foghat 80 frontelectric slide guitar and achieved its highest popularity  in the seventies in the US.  In 1971, former Savoy Brown members, Dave “Lonesome Dave” Peverett (guitar and vocals), Tony Stevens (bass), and Roger Earl (drums) teamed up with former Black Cat Bones member, Rod Price (guitar/slide guitar) to form Foghat.  Their debut self-titled album was released in 1972, and contained a remake of Willie Dixon’s I Just Want to Make Love to You.  This song received loads of FM radio airplay, and help catapult this band into the public’s eye.  This band saw quite a few gold, platinum and double Foghat 80 backplatinum albums through the seventies.  They changed bass players a few times, and finally Rod Price left the band in late 1980.  This concert was in support of the Tight Shoes album, released in May 1980.  Unfortunately, two of the founding fathers have passed away:  “Lonesome Dave” Peverett passed away in Feb 2000 due to kidney cancer, and Rod Price passed away in March 2005 due to a fall resulting from a heart attack.  Foghat has never stopped touring or recording, and Roger Earl is still a band member.

Deep Purple – 1996-06-23 – Dynamo Stadium – Moscow, Russia [FM Broadcast]

Deep Purple is an English rock band formed in 1968 in Hertford, England.  The band saw several lineup changes Deep Purple 96 frontin the years before their eight year hiatus  from 1976-1984.  These lineups during the years 1968-1976 are commonly referred to as Mark I, II, III and IV.  Deep Purple were ranked 22nd on VH1’s Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.  They have been nominated in October 2012, and then again in October 2013 for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but weren’t voted in.  Deep Purple, along with Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath, have been referred to as “The unholy trinity of British hard rock and heavy metal in the early to mid-seventies”.  Their Mark II lineup was by far the most successful of their lineups.  This configuration was comprised Deep Purple 96 back_1of Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Ian Gillan (vocals), Jon Lord (organ), Roger Glover (bass), and Ian Paice (drums).  This concert is basically that lineup, with the exception that Steve Morse replaces Blackmore.  This membership has been the most stable in the band’s history, and after Jon Lord’s retirement in 2002, left Ian Paice as the band’s only original member.  Lord unfortunately passed away in July 2012 due to pancreatic cancer and a pulmonary embolism.
