Well, due to technical difficulties, my last podcast post has been the 2016.12.31 broadcast.  At some point, I hope to restore all those missing broadcasts…..

Joe Walsh & Barnstorm – 1973.09.24 – Univ. Texas at Arlington [SBD]

Barnstorm was the group created by Joe Walsh in Colorado in 1972 after he left the James Gang. The original members of the group were Walsh (guitars, keyboards), Joe Vitale (drums, flute, keyboards) and Kenny Passarelli (bass).   Walsh and Vitale had previously played together in an Akron-based band called The Measles before Walsh joined the James Gang.  Later, the group added keyboardists Rocke Grace and Tommy Stephenson. Having two keyboardists permitted Barnstorm to play the complex arrangements live that it was creating through multitracking in the studio.  Barnstorm would record only three albums over its three-year life (two as principals, Barnstorm and The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get, plus serving as the backing band on Michael Stanley‘s Friends and Legends).  Barnstorm thus disbanded in 1973, although Walsh and Vitale continued to work together on various projects over the next 20 years. Walsh continued to record as a solo artist; in 1975, Walsh joined the Eagles, produced by Bill Szymczyk, who had also produced Barnstorm.  This soundboard recording catches Barnstorm at its finest, in Sep 1973 at Univ. J. Geils Band – 2009.04.25 – Reunion at the Fillmore, Detroit, MI [SBD]

The J. Geils Band was an American rock band formed in 1968, in Worcester, Massachusetts, under the leadership of guitarist John “J.” Geils. Other band members included vocalist Peter Wolf, harmonica player Richard “Magic Dick” Salwitz, drummer Stephen Bladd, vocalist/keyboardist Seth Justman and bassist Danny Klein.  Wolf and Justman served as principal songwriters. The band played R&B-influenced blues rock during the 1970s and soon achieved commercial success before moving towards a more radio-friendly sound in the early 1980s, which would soon bring the band to its commercial peak.  The band started as an acoustic blues trio in the mid-1960s, with guitarist John Geils, bassist Danny Klein (Dr. Funk) and harmonica player Richard Salwitz (stage name Magic Dick). The band formed under the name Snoopy and the Sopwith Camels while Geils was attending Worcester Polytechnic Institute for a couple of semesters. In 1968, the band switched focus, starting to play electric guitar and bass and recruiting two fellow musicians from a local Boston, MA band called The Hallucinations, who were a frequent performing band at the Boston venue Boston Tea Party on 53 Berkeley Street in Boston, MA. They were the drummer Stephen Bladd and his bandmate, (who was the fast-talking former WBCN disc jockey) singer Peter Wolf, born Peter Blankenfeld (originally from the Bronx, NY).  After their breakup in 1985, they rejoined for many reunion tours, 1999, 2005, 2009…. On February 19, 2009, the band reunited  to perform the opening concert at the new House of Blues in Boston on Lansdowne Street (formerly the location of Avalon, Axis, The Embassy and The Modern), with Marty Richards on drums and Mitch Chakour supplying backup vocals. Subsequently, they played two shows on April 24 and 25 at Detroit’s Fillmore Theater (formerly State Theater). They also did a second show on Lansdowne Street on April 28.  This soundboard recording is the second show in Detroit.  Unfortunately, J. Geils was found dead on 11 Apr. 2017 at his home in Groton, MA due to natural causes.

  The Rolling Stones – 1969.11.26/27/28 – Baltimore, MD and New York, NY [SBD]

The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in London in 1962. The original line-up consisted of Brian Jones (rhythm guitar, harmonica), Mick Jagger (lead vocals), Keith Richards (lead guitar, backing vocals), Bill Wyman (bass), Charlie Watts (drums), and Ian Stewart (piano). Stewart was removed from the official line-up in 1963 but continued as a touring member until his death in 1985. Jones left the band less than a month prior to his death in 1969, having already been replaced by Mick Taylor, who remained until 1974.  ‘Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out!’: The Rolling Stones in Concert is a live album by the Rolling Stones, released 4 September 1970 on Decca Records in the UK and on London Records in the US. It was recorded in New York City, New York and Baltimore, Maryland in November 1969, on the 26th, 27th, and 28th, just before the release of Let It Bleed. This tour was the first tour for Mick Taylor.  This is the Alternative Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out.  This awesome soundboard bootleg has been remastered by Teague Raw in 2012 from Glyn Johns Raw Demo.
