Dire Straits – 1986-04-26 – Sydney Entertainment Centre, Sydney, AU [SBD]

Dire Straits were a British rock band formed in 1977 by Mark Knopfler (lead guitar) and his younger brother, David (rhythm guitar).  dire straits -sydney-26-04-1986-frontIn the rock world, 1985 and 1986 belonged to Dire Straits.  On May 13, 1985, Dire Straits released their 5th studio album, the now legendary, Brothers In Arms. The disc became the first not only to sell one million copies in the CD format but also to outsell its vinyl version. Brothers in Arms would spend nine weeks at number 1 on the US Charts, and ten in that slot on UK charts. The album produced 3 top 20 singles in the US – So Far Away at #19, Walk of Life at #7 and the monster track, Money For Nothing, which went to number 1.  Money For Nothing received extensive exposure on MTV, and dire straits -sydney-26-04-1986-backwas a highlight of the Dire Straits set at Live Aid, when Sting joined the band to reprise the backing vocals he had provided on the album version of the tune. Brothers In Arms would win two Grammy Awards in 1986 and also won Best British Album at the 1987 Brit Awards. The band toured extensively in support of the album playing over 247 shows in 100 cities during 1985 and 1986. This soundboard recording captures Dire Straits on April 26, 1986, on the last night of the tour in Sydney.

BTO – 1984.07.01 – Harpos’s Concert Theater, Detroit, MI [FM]

Bachman-Turner Overdrive were a Canadian rock band formed in Winnepeg, Canada in 1973 from the band Brave Belt.  Bachman-Turner Overdrive 1984-07-01 Detroit - FrontBTO were together from 1973-1979, 1983-2005 and (as Bachman-Turner) from 2009-2014.  Bachman–Turner Overdrive (BTO) had their heyday in the 1970s, with songs such as Let It Ride, Roll On Down the Highway, Takin’ Care of Business and the number 1 hit, You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet. Success came and went quickly, however, and by the end of the decade, BTO had disbanded. Of course, since nothing is forever in the rock world, BTO reformed in 1983,  releasing a new album and launching a US tour.  This FM broadcast captures Bachman-Turner Overdrive 1984-07-01 Detroit - BackBTO on the 1st of July 1984 (Even though the cover art says the 4th), in Detroit, MI.  Check this one out to hear the first, but probably not the last BTO reunion….  PS – this is a very special version of this show that includes the missing 2nd encore and an interview with the band!

** Next week will be a rebroadcast of an earlier show due to work.  **

The Police are regarded as one of the first new wave bands to achieve mainstream success.  Their 1978 debut album, Outlandos d’Amour,  reached No. 6 in the UK, and their second album, Regatta de Blanc, became the first of five consecutive UK No. 1 albums.  Synchronicity,  from 1983 was No. 1 in both the UK and U.S., and sold over 8 million copies in the U.S. alone.  They disbanded in 1986, but reunited in early 2007 for a world tour that ended in August 2008.  They were the world’s highest-earning musicians in 2008, Police 1979.04.05 Backthanks to their reunion tour.  In early 1979, The Police went on tour in North America in support of their debut album, Outlandos d’Amour.  The tour kicked off at the legendary Whiskey A Go Go in Los Angeles and ran until May 25, with the band criss-crossing the US and Canada.  They often played 2 shows a night, and rarely took a night off.  Check out this broadcast to hear the Police at their first show on 5 Apr 1979, in their first US tour.

Dire Straits – 1979-03-06 – Tower Theater, Philadelphia, PA [SBD]

Dire Straits were a British band that was formed in 1977 by Mark and David Knopfler (lead and rhythm guitars, respectively), John Illsley (bass), and Pick Withers (drums).  Their career spanned a total of 15 years.  They broke up in 1988, but reformed in 1991.  They broke up for good in 1995, when Mark Knopfler pursued his solo career full-time.  In reviews of Sultans of Swing, Dire Straits‘ first big hit, often cited Mark Knopfler’s vocals as sounding like Bob Dylan.  When he saw Dire Straits for the first time in 1978, Dylan was so impressed that he invited Knopfler and drummer Pick Withers to play on his next album, Slow Train Coming.  Knopfler also played on the Dylan albums Infidels and Down In The GrooveWhen Dire Straits launched the 2nd leg of their fall tour in October 1978, it marked their first extended run of shows outside of the UK.  The band visited France, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, promoting both their self-titled debut album and the single, Sultans of Swing.  A couple weeks ago, we heard a concert from that debut tour, but this week, we will catch a great soundboard recording from their tour in support of their second album, Communique. This was recorded at Tower Theater, Philadelphia, PA on 6 Mar 1979.

Yes – 1979-04-18 – Colisee Pepsi Quebec City, Canada [SBD]

Yes is an English band formed in 1968 by bassist Chris Squire and vocalist Jon Anderson.  Chris Squire took a hiatus from Yes in May of 2015, when he was diagnosed with acute erythoid leukemia.  Squire, unfortunately, passed away on 27 Jun 2015.  This is the last segment here on CRAB honoring Chris Squire, and we hope that you’ve enjoyed these concerts.  This concert, once again, features the original classic Yes lineup, comprised of Jon Anderson (vocals), Steve Howe (guitar), Chris Squire (bass), Rick Wakeman (keyboards), and Alan White (drums).  This soundboard recording was captured on 18 Apr 1979 in Quebec City, Canada.  This performance is as good Yes 1979.04.18 backas the sound quality, which makes for a real treat.  This bootleg has had some TLC in the remastering department, and is probably the best version of this you will hear.   This tour was in support of the Tormato album.  It should do fine to wet your appetite for next week’s final installment of CRAB‘s Yes tribute.  Next week, I shall be playing a bootleg from the second classic Yes lineup, with Trevor Rabin replacing Steve Howe, and Tony Kaye in place of Rick Wakeman.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers  – 1978-12-31 – Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, Santa Monica, CA  [SBD]

Tom Petty is an American musician, best known as the vocalist of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, as well as member, and co-founder of The Traveling Wilburys.  Around 1976, Petty fomed a band known as the Epics, later Petty 12 31 1978 Santa Monicato evolve into Mudcrutch, containing future Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench.  Although popular in the Gainesville area, they never broke into mainstream.  After Mudcrutch broke up, Petty went solo and Tench decided to form his own band.  Eventually, Petty and Campbell collaborated with Tench and fellow members Ron Blair and Stan Lynch, resulting in the first lineup of the Heartbreakers.  The band achieved far greater sucess in Britain.  The single “BreakdownPetty 12 31 1978 Santa Monica - backwas rereleased in 1977 and peaked at #40 in early 1978.  This concert is the New Year’s Eve show in Santa Monica, 1978, and Petty covers a classic party song, Shout.  Originally recorded by the Isley Brothers in 1959, the song experienced a new wave of popularity in 1978 thanks to a version by Otis Day and The Knights that was featured in the movie Animal House.  In fact, while Petty was playing this concert, The Blues Brothers were a few hundred miles north at Winterland, in San Francisco, leading in for the Grateful Dead.

The Runaways – 1978-01-07 – The Palladium, New York, NY  [FM]

In the mid 1970’s, 5 young women – Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Sandy West, Cherie Currie and Micki Steele (later replaced TheRunaways -Palladium78-Frontby Peggy Foster and then Jackie Fox) – formed a band and the rest as they say, is history.  Punk and Heavy Metal were two emerging genres and were not the exclusive domain of the boys of rock and roll.  They released their first album in 1976, then headlined shows with opening acts such as Cheap Trick, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and Van Halen.  In the summer of 1977, the bands selling more albums in Japan than The Runaways were ABBA, Kiss and Led Zeppelin.  They were mobbed by fans on their visit, and Joan Jett later described the mass hysteria as being like Beatlemania.  This FM broadcast captures the band at TheRunaways -Palladium78-Backthe Palladium in New York, NY on January 7, 1978.  By that point, Currie had left the band, and tensions were rising between the other members.  In addition, while The Runaways were far more popular overseas, they had yet to breakthrough in the US.  In just about a year, the band would break up, due to creative differences between Jett, who wanted the band to play more punk and new wave music, and Ford, who pushed to steer the group toward more hard rock and heavy metal.  Check this one and hear The Runaways at their peak, and get a glimpse of what Joan Jett and Lita Ford sounded like before their highly successful solo careers.

The Rolling Stones  – 1978-07-06 – Detroit Masonic Hall, Detroit, MI  [SBD]

The Rolling Stones are an English band formed in London in 1962, originally comprised of Brian Jones (Guitar, Harmonica), Stones 1978 frontIan Stewart (Piano), Mick Jagger (lead vocals, harmonica), Keith Richards (Guitar), Bill Wyman (Bass), and Charlie Watts (Drums).  The mid 70’s were not the best of years for “The Greatest Rock and Roll Band In The World”.  The Stones’ albums during that period had not lived up to the standard set by 1972’s Exile on Main Street.  Drug problems plagued Keith.  Mick seemed more interested in the party life (he was a regular at Studio 54) than music.  Mick Taylor (Brian Jones’ replacement) quit the band.  As the punk scene took a leading role on rock’s stage, many depicted them as decadent, aging millionaires and criticized their Stones 1978 backmusic as stagnant.  All that changed in 1978.  The band struck back at their critics with a vengeance, releasing Some Girls in June of that year.  That album, with songs such as Miss You, Beast of Burden and Shattered, was easily the best Stones album since Exile, and ranks as one of the finest of their career.  Check out this soundboard recording, on 6 July 1978,  to relive the return of The Rolling Stones to the top of the rock world.
