ZZ Top – 1980.04.15 – Pine Knob, Clarkston, MI [SBD]

ZZ Top is a rock band formed in 1969 in Houston, Texas. The band has, since 1970, consisted of bassist and lead vocalist ZZ Top 0 - Front CoverDusty Hill, guitarist and lead vocalist Billy Gibbons (the band’s leader, main lyricist and musical arranger), and drummer Frank Beard. The band released its first album—called ZZ Top’s First Album—in 1971. Beginning with blues-inspired rock, the band incorporated new wave, punk rock and dance-rock by using synthesizers. The band is also known for its humorous lyrics laced with double entendres and innuendo. The original line-up was formed in Houston and consisted of Gibbons, organist Lanier Greig (died February 2013) and drummer Dan Mitchell. The name of the band was Gibbons’ idea. The band had a little apartment covered with concert posters and he noticed that many performers’ nZZ Top00 - Back Coverames utilized initials. Gibbons particularly noticed B.B. King and Z.Z. Hill and thought of combining the two into “ZZ King”, but considered it too similar to the original name. He then figured that “king is going at the top” which brought him to “ZZ Top”. In 1979, ZZ Top signed with Warner Bros. Records and released the album Degüello. While the album went platinum, it only reached no. 24 on the Billboard chart. The album produced two popular singles: “I Thank You“, a cover of a song recorded by Sam & Dave, and “Cheap Sunglasses“. The band remained a popular concert attraction and toured in support of Degüello. In April 1980, ZZ Top made their first appearance in Europe, performing for the German music television show Rockpalast.   It is right around that time that we catch ZZ Top in their element in Clarkston, MI.

BTO – 1984.09.24 – Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada [FM]

Bachman–Turner Overdrive, often abbreviated as BTO, is a Canadian rock group from Winnipeg, Manitoba, that had a series of hit albums and singles in the 1970s, selling over 7 million albums in that decade alone. BTO 00 - CoverTheir 1970s catalog included five Top 40 albums and six US Top 40 singles (ten in Canada). The original lineup consisted of Randy Bachman (lead guitar, lead vocals), Fred Turner (bass guitar, lead vocals), Tim Bachman (guitar, vocals) and Robbie Bachman (drums). This lineup released two albums in 1973. The second and most commercially successful lineup featured Blair Thornton (lead guitar), in place of Tim Bachman. After leaving The Guess Who at the height of that band’s success, Randy Bachman recalled being labelled “a lunatic and a loser” and that “nobody wanted to work with me.” The exception was Chad Allan, former Guess Who lead singer/keyboardist who had left that band four years before Randy. The two agreed to explore a musical project, and Randy then turned to family. The result was the band Brave Belt, formed in Winnipeg in 1971 BTO 00 - Back Coverwith the additions of Randy’s brother Robin “Robbie” Bachman on drums, and Gary Bachman acting as band manager. Brave Belt’s self-titled first album, which saw Randy playing both lead guitar and bass, did not sell particularly well. The record label still wanted Brave Belt to tour, so Randy (at the suggestion of Neil Young) hired fellow Winnipeg bassist/vocalist C.F. “Fred” Turner to perform in the band’s scheduled gigs. Turner was soon asked to be a full-time member and sing lead for the recording of Brave Belt II in 1972. After Reprise Records dropped Brave Belt from their label, Randy emptied his own bank account to finance another set of recordings, and began to shop around the next album. The band eventually landed a new record deal from Mercury Records, one which Randy Bachman proclaimed as a pure stroke of luck.  They changed their name to Bachman Turner Overdrive and rode the wave of popularity until they disbanded in 1979 and this bootleg catches them shortly after they reunited four years later.

Jeff Beck – 1999.03.21 – Oakdale Theater, Wallingford, CT [SBD]

Jeff  Beck (Geoffrey Arnold) is an English rock guitarist. He is one of the three noted guitarists to have played with The Yardbirds Jeff Beck Front Cover(the other two being Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page). Beck also formed The Jeff Beck Group and Beck, Bogert & Appice. Much of Beck’s recorded output has been instrumental, with a focus on innovative sound, and his releases have spanned genres ranging from blues rock, hard rock, jazz fusion, and an additional blend of guitar-rock and electronica. Although he recorded two hit albums (in 1975 and 1976) as a solo act, Beck has not established or maintained the sustained commercial success of many of his contemporaries and bandmates. He was ranked fifth in Rolling Stone‘s list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” and the magazine, upon whose cover Jeff Beck Back CoverBeck has appeared three times, has described him as “one of the most influential lead guitarists in rock”. He is often called a “guitarist’s guitarist”. Beck has earned wide critical praise and received the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance six times and Best Pop Instrumental Performance once. In 2014 he received the British Academy’s Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. Beck has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: as a member of the Yardbirds (1992) and as a solo artist (2009).  This soundboard bootleg catches Beck in 1999 at the Oakdale Theater in Wallingford, CT.

Dire Straits – 1986-04-26 – Sydney Entertainment Centre, Sydney, AU [SBD]

Dire Straits were a British rock band formed in 1977 by Mark Knopfler (lead guitar) and his younger brother, David (rhythm guitar).  dire straits -sydney-26-04-1986-frontIn the rock world, 1985 and 1986 belonged to Dire Straits.  On May 13, 1985, Dire Straits released their 5th studio album, the now legendary, Brothers In Arms. The disc became the first not only to sell one million copies in the CD format but also to outsell its vinyl version. Brothers in Arms would spend nine weeks at number 1 on the US Charts, and ten in that slot on UK charts. The album produced 3 top 20 singles in the US – So Far Away at #19, Walk of Life at #7 and the monster track, Money For Nothing, which went to number 1.  Money For Nothing received extensive exposure on MTV, and dire straits -sydney-26-04-1986-backwas a highlight of the Dire Straits set at Live Aid, when Sting joined the band to reprise the backing vocals he had provided on the album version of the tune. Brothers In Arms would win two Grammy Awards in 1986 and also won Best British Album at the 1987 Brit Awards. The band toured extensively in support of the album playing over 247 shows in 100 cities during 1985 and 1986. This soundboard recording captures Dire Straits on April 26, 1986, on the last night of the tour in Sydney.

BTO – 1984.07.01 – Harpos’s Concert Theater, Detroit, MI [FM]

Bachman-Turner Overdrive were a Canadian rock band formed in Winnepeg, Canada in 1973 from the band Brave Belt.  Bachman-Turner Overdrive 1984-07-01 Detroit - FrontBTO were together from 1973-1979, 1983-2005 and (as Bachman-Turner) from 2009-2014.  Bachman–Turner Overdrive (BTO) had their heyday in the 1970s, with songs such as Let It Ride, Roll On Down the Highway, Takin’ Care of Business and the number 1 hit, You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet. Success came and went quickly, however, and by the end of the decade, BTO had disbanded. Of course, since nothing is forever in the rock world, BTO reformed in 1983,  releasing a new album and launching a US tour.  This FM broadcast captures Bachman-Turner Overdrive 1984-07-01 Detroit - BackBTO on the 1st of July 1984 (Even though the cover art says the 4th), in Detroit, MI.  Check this one out to hear the first, but probably not the last BTO reunion….  PS – this is a very special version of this show that includes the missing 2nd encore and an interview with the band!

** Next week will be a rebroadcast of an earlier show due to work.  **

The first segment was Alice Cooper, 1980, El Paso, TX from the Flush the Fashion tour.

alice cooper 1980Vincent Damon Furnier, Alice Cooper, started his musical career in 1964 in a band called The Spiders.  (It was called the Earwigs before they actually learned to play instruments, and instead mimed Beatles songs for a talent show.)  The Spiders released their first single in 1965.  In 1966, after the band graduated from high school, they released their second single.  In 1967, they were starting to travel outside of Arizona, and renamed themselves Nazz.  This name was shortlived, and in 1968 when the band discovered that Todd Rundgren’s band was also named Nazz.  So, Alice Cooper was born.

Alice Cooper’s first big hit was I’m Eighteen in 1971, followed by an even larger hit in 1972, School’s Out.  The band quickly reached their peak in 1973 with Billion Dollar Babies.  Furnier took the band’s name as his own, legal, name and went solo in 1975.  By 1977, alcoholism and drug use had taken its toll, and he put himself into a sanitarium for treatment.  This concert in El Paso, TX was on the heels of leaving the sanitarium in 1978, and was probably the best (or one of the best) lineups of Alice Cooper.

The next segment was supposed to be Bon Scott Forever Volume I, but somehow Volume II got into the playlist in its place.

bsf02-frontBon Scott was the second lead vocalist for ACDC, taking over for Dave Evans in 1974.  Bon had originally tryed out for the drummer position, which is what he did in his earlier bands, The Valentines and Fraternity.

Bon Scott was rated in the July 2004 issue of Classic Rock as number one in a list of the “100 Greatest Frontmen Of All Time”

ACDC rapidly rose in popularity, and were on the brink of a total commercial breakthrough, with bsf02-backthe release of the 1979 album, Highway to Hell.  Sadly, though,  Bon Scott passed away 19 Feb 1980 after a night of heavy partying in the UK.

Volume II of this bootleg set, not only contains Ride On, recorded by Bon Scott with Trust (His last known recording.), but also contains the original radio broadcast of the news of Bon’s death.

The last segment was Bachman Turner Overdrive Live at Harpo’s, Detroit, MI

BTOSadly, this bootleg has no cover art.  However, I just came into another BTO bootleg from Harpo’s 1984-07-01 with full cover art, and will broadcast that one sometime in the future.   This BTO lineup was Randy Bachman, C.F. Turner, Tim Bachman, Garry Peterson (was in the Guess Who with Randy), and Billy Chapman.  This concert took place at Harpo’s in Detroit, MI on 1 Apr 1984.

Randy Bachman left the Guess Who in 1971, and didn’t immediately form BTO.  Instead, he and Chad Allen formed Brave Belt with Rob Bachman.  When they were asked to tour, they added C.F. Turner.  It was in 1973 that Mercury signed them to a recording contract (just as they were about to throw in the towel).  Their initial lineup was Randy Bachman, C.F. Turner, and Tim and Robbie Bachman at which time they changed their name to Bachman Turner Overdrive.

Next week’s broadcast, 17 Jan 2015 will air starting at 8 PM Eastern time, and will include:

Deep Purple – Live at Sao Paulo, Brazil, 1991

TBD (Since I accidentally played Vol 2 of Bon Scott on 10 Jan)
