Grateful Dead – 1994-07-20 – Deer Creek Amphitheater, Noblesville, IN [SBD]

This catches the Grateful Dead in the summer of 1994, when the band, unfortunately, was nearing its end. Garcia was in failingGD940720_Front150 health, and often had difficulties staying focused when playing live. Yet, they could still make some nights magical. This soundboard recording from July 20, 1994,  for example, finds the band playing Childhood’s End and Matilda, a song once recorded by Harry Belafonte, for the very first time.  On January 19, 1994, The Grateful Dead are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Bruce Hornsby makes the induction speech, Jerry Garcia does not attend the ceremonies so the band brings a life size cardboard cutout of him!

GD940720_Back150Garcia’’s health continues to fail, making playing live more and more difficult for him.  Despite Garcia’’s issues, the band grosses over $50 million in North America from touring in 1994, their largest revenue year.  No live shows from 1994 have been officially released.  This show is an excellent show, and one of the better 1994 performances the Dead managed, and the sound quality is great!

Govt Mule – 1995-09-12 – Chester’s, Fayetteville, AR [SBD]mule 09 12 1995 front

In 1994, Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody of The Allman Brothers Band launched a side project called Gov’t Mule. Haynes and Woody were fans of power trios such as Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, recruited Matt Abts to handle the drums.  The new band, affectionately known to its fans as The Mule, released their self titled debut album in October 1995. This soundboard recording captures The Mule just about a month before the release of that disc, onmule 09 12 1995 back September 12, 1995, at Chester’s, in Fayetteville. AR.  Check this one out to hear Govt Mule in it’s early days, when some people, including myself say that was when the band was at it’s best.  The band is still together and touring to this day, but now is not a power trio, and instead has Warren Haynes (guitar), Matt Abts (drums), Danny Louis (keyboards), and Jorgen Carlsson (bass).  Catch ’em live, or buy a Mule CD today!

Bob Dylan – 1994-08-14 – Woodstock, Saugerties, NY  [SBD]

Bob Dylan is an American singer-songwriter.  Much of his most celebrated work dates from the 1960’s when hisBob Dylan - 1994-08-14 - Woodstock, NY-f songs chronicled social unrest, although Dylan repudiated suggestions from journalists that he was a spokesman for his generation.  His recording career, spanning 50 years, has explored the traditions in American song – from folk, blues, and country to gospel, rock and roll, and rockabilly to English, Scottish and Irish folk music, emracing even jazz.  Early songs, such as “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “The Times They Are a-Changin‘” became anthems for the American civil rights and anti- war movements.  Bob Dylan said in 1985, “The thing about rock’n’roll is that for me anyway it wasn’t enough… There wereBob Dylan - 1994-08-14 - Woodstock, NY-b great catch-phrases and driving pulse rhythms… but the songs weren’t serious or didn’t reflect life in a realistic way. I knew that when I got into folk music, it was more of a serious type of thing. The songs are filled with more despair, more sadness, more triumph, more faith in the supernatural, much deeper feelings.”  He has been touring steadily since the late 1980s on what has been dubbed the ‘Never Ending Tour’.  This soundboard recording catches Dylan at Woodstock 94 on the final night.

Traffic – 1994-08-14 – Woodstock, Saugerties, NY  [SBD]

As legend goes, Steve Winwood reformed Traffic in 1994 after a Dead Head left a message for Bob WeirTrafficWoodstockFront suggesting that if would be “cool” if The Dead and Traffic toured together!  I’m not quite sure how true that is, but Traffic did come back together in 1994, and they were the lead-in band for the Grateful Dead’s summer tour! One stop they made, however, without the Dead, was at the Woodstock 1994 Festival in Saugerties, NY on August 14, 1994.  Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the original Woodstock festival, the concert was originally scheduled on August 13 and 14 and billed as “2 more days of peace and music”, borrowing TrafficWoodstockBackfrom the 1969 concert’s promotional posters.   A 3rd day was eventually on August 12th.  Traffic played before a crowd of 350,000, who despite the rain and mud, conditions similar to those in 1969, were mostly well behaved and embodied the spirit shown by those who attended the original Woodstock.  Check this one out to hear a reunited Traffic on its first tour in 2 decades, playing live at the follow up to perhaps the most legendary concert in rock history.

Allman Brothers Band – 1994-08-14 – Woodstock, Saugerties, NY  [SBD]

Another band that didn’tallmans 08 14 1994 FRONT make the original Woodstock but made sure to play the 25th anniversary was the one and only Allman Brothers Band. The Allmans had been back together since 1989, having reformed after a 7 year hiatus.  In addition to original members Greg Allman, Dickey Betts, Butch Trucks and Jai Johanny “Jaimoe” Johanson, the 1995 version of the band also included Warren Haynes, Allen Woody, and Marc Quiñones.  Just like Dylan and Traffic, the Allmans also played on the final day of Woodstock 25, on August 14, 1994.allmans 08 14 1994 Back

Steppenwolf – 1968-08-27 – Fillmore West, San Francisco, CA  [SBD]

While 1967 was the Summer of Love, 1968 may have been America’s darkest hour. Violence erupted throughout the country – riots steppenwolf 68 - frontin Chicago during the Democratic National Convention, the My Lai massacre in Viet Nam, and of course, the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert kennedy. Perhaps its not a surprise that music that year also had a darker tone.  In 1967, a band called The Sparrows changed their name to Steppenwolf, inspired by the Hermann Hesse’s novel of the same name. That novel portrays man’s struggle between spirituality and aggression, similar to what was transpiring in America in 1968. About a year later, in June 1968, the band skyrocketed to fame when they released the single Born To Be Wild. The song contains the lyric “heavy metal thunder”, which of course became the name for the more aggressive, thunderous genre of music that emerged as the 1960’s evolved steppenwolf 68 - backinto the 1970’s.  The song climbed to #2 on the Billboard singles charts, and over the years it has become one of rock’s legendary tunes. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Born To Be Wild at No. 129 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list. Since being included in the soundtrack for the movie Easy Rider in 1969, Born to Be Wild has been featured in dozens of other films, such as Coming Home, Borat, Dr. Dolittle 2, and Mr. Bean’s Holiday, as well as countless TV shows, such as Married With Children and Miami Vice. This soundboard recording captures Steppenwolf at the Fillmore West, just 2 months after the release of Born To Be Wild, on August 27, 1968.  Download this one this one to catch John Kay and his band at the start of a 7 year run of success that, in addition to Born To Be Wild, would include such tunes as The Pusher, Magic Carpet Ride, Sookie Sookie, and Move Over.   (At the end of this broadcast segment, there is a shout-out to some very special TAS alumni.)

Curtis Knight & The Squires, feat. Jimi Hendrix – 1965.12.26 – Georges Club 20, Hackensack, NJ [SBD]

In 1967, he would be the newcomer who burned his guitar at Monterrey Pop.  In 1969, he would be the rock god who closedJimi - 12-26-1965 FRONT Woodstock with the Star Spangled Banner. In 1970, he would be the icon that we lost way too soon. But in 1965, he was simply Jimi, playing guitar for Curtis Knight and the Squires. He hooked up with Curtis Knight after his brief enlistment in the US Army with the 101st Airborne, as well as performing with the Isley Brothers in 1964 and Little Richard in the beginning of 1965.  Later that year, he joined a New York based R&B band, Curtis Knight and the Squires, after meeting Knight in the lobby of a hotel that they were all staying at.  Hendrix performed with them a total of eight months, and recorded a singleJimi - 12-26-1965 BACK, How Would You Feel, backed with Welcome Home.  Knight was part of the 1960’s music scene in Harlem, so the Squires played most of their gigs in small clubs in the New York and New Jersey area. On December 26, 1965,  Knight, Jimi and the Squires found themselves in Hackensack, NJ, at Georges Club 20 for a post Christmas gig. By some miracle, a soundboard recording exists from that show! Download it here to listen to Jimi Hendrix long before his rise to stardom.

The Beatles – 1965-08-15 – Shea Stadium, Flushing, NY [SBD]

The Beatles were an English band formed in Liverpool in 1960 by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison andThe Beatles Shea Front Cover Ringo Starr.  I was 6 years old, just about to enter first grade, and way too young to understand what it meant when The Beatles took the stage at Shea on August 15, 1965, fifty years ago the night of this Happy Hour broadcast.  Once again, The Beatles would make history. The show was the first on their 1965 summer tour, but more importantly, it was also the first-ever stadium rock concert.  Beatlemania, which was in full swing,  required a setting larger than any band before had ever needed.  Rock & roll would never be the same after this show. The Beatles Shea Back Cover  Today’s mega outdoor events, complete with video screens, giant stages, special effects and pyrotechnics are the legacy of the Beatles performance that August night in Queens. This soundboard recording, taken from the master tapes of the show, captures the entire 30 minute performance (a 1/2 hour!!  — today, I’m annoyed if a band plays less than 2 hours!), including the introduction by Ed Sullivan. A dozen songs, 30 minutes and the show was over, but its impact has lasted a life time.

Santana – 1971-03-23 – The Forum, Los Angeles, CA [SBD]

In 1970, Santana had an enormous commercial and critical success with the band’s second album, AbraxasSantanafreeforumFR, which featured such soon to be classics as Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen and Oye Como Va.  The album went to #1, and drew widespread acclaim for its mix of Latin influences with traditional rock arrangements. Then in early 1971, the band added San Francisco teenage guitar prodigy Neil Schon to its lineup, giving the group two dynamic lead guitarists.  This soundboard captures the new line up at The Forum in Los Angeles on March 23, 1971

In addition, Carlos is joined by Jose Feliciano for the last 3 songs of the night.  This is truly classic Santana, and a show that you justSantanafreeforumBK can’t miss.  By the way, the artwork lists this show as March 21, but as you can see from the poster that is included in the archive, March 23 is the correct date!

Dire Straits – 1986-04-26 – Sydney Entertainment Centre, Sydney, AU [SBD]

Dire Straits were a British rock band formed in 1977 by Mark Knopfler (lead guitar) and his younger brother, David (rhythm guitar).  dire straits -sydney-26-04-1986-frontIn the rock world, 1985 and 1986 belonged to Dire Straits.  On May 13, 1985, Dire Straits released their 5th studio album, the now legendary, Brothers In Arms. The disc became the first not only to sell one million copies in the CD format but also to outsell its vinyl version. Brothers in Arms would spend nine weeks at number 1 on the US Charts, and ten in that slot on UK charts. The album produced 3 top 20 singles in the US – So Far Away at #19, Walk of Life at #7 and the monster track, Money For Nothing, which went to number 1.  Money For Nothing received extensive exposure on MTV, and dire straits -sydney-26-04-1986-backwas a highlight of the Dire Straits set at Live Aid, when Sting joined the band to reprise the backing vocals he had provided on the album version of the tune. Brothers In Arms would win two Grammy Awards in 1986 and also won Best British Album at the 1987 Brit Awards. The band toured extensively in support of the album playing over 247 shows in 100 cities during 1985 and 1986. This soundboard recording captures Dire Straits on April 26, 1986, on the last night of the tour in Sydney.

BTO – 1984.07.01 – Harpos’s Concert Theater, Detroit, MI [FM]

Bachman-Turner Overdrive were a Canadian rock band formed in Winnepeg, Canada in 1973 from the band Brave Belt.  Bachman-Turner Overdrive 1984-07-01 Detroit - FrontBTO were together from 1973-1979, 1983-2005 and (as Bachman-Turner) from 2009-2014.  Bachman–Turner Overdrive (BTO) had their heyday in the 1970s, with songs such as Let It Ride, Roll On Down the Highway, Takin’ Care of Business and the number 1 hit, You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet. Success came and went quickly, however, and by the end of the decade, BTO had disbanded. Of course, since nothing is forever in the rock world, BTO reformed in 1983,  releasing a new album and launching a US tour.  This FM broadcast captures Bachman-Turner Overdrive 1984-07-01 Detroit - BackBTO on the 1st of July 1984 (Even though the cover art says the 4th), in Detroit, MI.  Check this one out to hear the first, but probably not the last BTO reunion….  PS – this is a very special version of this show that includes the missing 2nd encore and an interview with the band!
