This broadcast continues our journey to the Rockin’ Seventies….

Foghat – 1976 – King Biscuit Flower Hour [FM]

Foghat is an English rock band formed in London in 1971 by members Dave Peverett (“Lonesome Dave”) on guitar and Foghat - King Biscuit Flower Hour frontvocals, Tony Stevens on bass, and Roger Earl on drums when they split from Savoy Brown in 1970.  Rod Price on guitar/slide guitar joined the band after he left the Black Cat Bones in December 1970.  Their debut 1972 album, Foghat, had a cover of Willie Dixon’s “I Just Want to Make Love to You“, which received heavy FM play rotation.  There were several under appreciated tracks on this initial album, including a remake of the Savoy Brown bluesy tune, “Leavin’ Again (Again!)” and “Sarah Lee“, a classic blues burner with a truly inspirational slide solo by Rod Price.   This concert was recorded Foghat-King-Biscuit-1976-Back-Coverfor and played on the King Biscuit Flower Hour in 1976 with the original band lineup, touring in support of the 1976 album, Night Shift.  It also includes a couple bonus tracks from 1974 as well.  This was truly Foghat at their best. The band has achieved 8 gold records, one platinum and one double platinum record, and continues to record and perform to the present day, despite several lineup changes.

Boston – 1977.03.19 – Long Beach Arena, Long Beach, CA, King Biscuit Flower Hour [FM]

Boston is an American rock band from Boston, MA that achieved their most notable successes during the Boston-LB-77-frontseventies and eighties.  Centered on guitarist, keyboardist, songwriter and producer Tom Scholz, the band is a staple of classic rock radio playlists.  Boston‘s best known works include the songs More Than a Feeling, Piece of Mind, Foreplay/Long Time, Rock and Roll Band, Smokin’, Don’t Look Back and Amanda.  They have sold over 31 million albums in the United States, of which 17 million were from their self-titled debut album and 7 million from their second album, Don’t Look Back.  Scholz actually started writing music in 1969 while attending MIT.  Boston-LB-77-backAfter graduating with a masters degree, he worked at Poloroid, and used his salary to build a studio in his basement.  He created a series of demo songs, with him playing all instruments instead of drums.  He signed a record deal, but had to do a live demo, so hurriedly put together a performing unit capable of reproducing the demos.  This concert was at the height of their popularity, and was recorded for the KBFH at Long Beach Arena, Long Beach, CA.

Derek and the Dominos – 1970.10.23 – Fillmore East, New York [HQ-AUD]

The Yardbirds.  Cream.  Blind Faith.  Delaney and Bonnie and Friends.  Eric Clapton has had historic turns with each of derek 10-23-1970 frontthose bands, not to mention an astounding solo career.  Yet, no moment in that legacy can top his brief time fronting Derek and the Dominos in 1970.  Sure, the band had only 1 album, but it just happened to be one of the finest in rock and roll history.  Slowhand, fueled by his unrequited love for Patti Harrison, and driven to play at his best by the presence of Duane Allman, produced his masterpiece, the 2 record set known as Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs.  After completing the album, the band toured the U.S. from October to December 1970, then Clapton went into a drug-induced exile for 3 years.  1970-10-23-fillmore-backFor those of us too young to see the Dominos live, CRAB fortunately has soundboard recordings of both of their October shows at the legendary Fillmore East.  This concert is the second show.  It’s a slightly different set list than the previous show, but what’s amazing is that neither night features Layla or Bell Bottom Blues, the 2 most well known songs from the album!  Classic versions of songs such as Let It Rain, Little Wing, and Got To Get Better In A Little While more than make up for these omissions.
