Dire Straits – 1978-10-19 – Live at the Shouwburg, Rotterdam, Holland [SBD]

Dire Straits were a British band that was formed in 1977 by Mark and David Knopfler (lead and rhythm guitars, respectively), rotterdam-78-frontJohn Illsley (bass), and Pick Withers (drums).  Their career spanned a total of 15 years.  They broke up in 1988, but reformed in 1991.  They broke up for good in 1995, when Mark Knopfler pursued his solo career full-time.  In reviews of Sultans of Swing, Dire Straits‘ first big hit, often cited Mark Knopfler’s vocals as sounding like Bob Dylan.  When he saw Dire Straits for the first time in 1978, Dylan was so impressed that he invited Knopfler and drummer Pick Withers to play on his next album, Slow Train Coming.  Knopfler also played on the Dylan albums Infidels and Down In The Grooverotterdam-78-backWhen Dire Straits launched the 2nd leg of their fall tour in October 1978, it marked their first extended run of shows outside of the UK.  The band visited France, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, promoting both their self-titled debut album and the single, Sultans of Swing.  This  soundboard recording captures the band on 19 October 1978, the 2nd of 6 nights in the Netherlands at the very outset of their career.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers  – 1978-12-31 – Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, Santa Monica, CA  [SBD]

Tom Petty is an American musician, best known as the vocalist of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, as well as member, and co-founder of The Traveling Wilburys.  Around 1976, Petty fomed a band known as the Epics, later Petty 12 31 1978 Santa Monicato evolve into Mudcrutch, containing future Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench.  Although popular in the Gainesville area, they never broke into mainstream.  After Mudcrutch broke up, Petty went solo and Tench decided to form his own band.  Eventually, Petty and Campbell collaborated with Tench and fellow members Ron Blair and Stan Lynch, resulting in the first lineup of the Heartbreakers.  The band achieved far greater sucess in Britain.  The single “BreakdownPetty 12 31 1978 Santa Monica - backwas rereleased in 1977 and peaked at #40 in early 1978.  This concert is the New Year’s Eve show in Santa Monica, 1978, and Petty covers a classic party song, Shout.  Originally recorded by the Isley Brothers in 1959, the song experienced a new wave of popularity in 1978 thanks to a version by Otis Day and The Knights that was featured in the movie Animal House.  In fact, while Petty was playing this concert, The Blues Brothers were a few hundred miles north at Winterland, in San Francisco, leading in for the Grateful Dead.

The Runaways – 1978-01-07 – The Palladium, New York, NY  [FM]

In the mid 1970’s, 5 young women – Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Sandy West, Cherie Currie and Micki Steele (later replaced TheRunaways -Palladium78-Frontby Peggy Foster and then Jackie Fox) – formed a band and the rest as they say, is history.  Punk and Heavy Metal were two emerging genres and were not the exclusive domain of the boys of rock and roll.  They released their first album in 1976, then headlined shows with opening acts such as Cheap Trick, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and Van Halen.  In the summer of 1977, the bands selling more albums in Japan than The Runaways were ABBA, Kiss and Led Zeppelin.  They were mobbed by fans on their visit, and Joan Jett later described the mass hysteria as being like Beatlemania.  This FM broadcast captures the band at TheRunaways -Palladium78-Backthe Palladium in New York, NY on January 7, 1978.  By that point, Currie had left the band, and tensions were rising between the other members.  In addition, while The Runaways were far more popular overseas, they had yet to breakthrough in the US.  In just about a year, the band would break up, due to creative differences between Jett, who wanted the band to play more punk and new wave music, and Ford, who pushed to steer the group toward more hard rock and heavy metal.  Check this one and hear The Runaways at their peak, and get a glimpse of what Joan Jett and Lita Ford sounded like before their highly successful solo careers.

The Rolling Stones  – 1978-07-06 – Detroit Masonic Hall, Detroit, MI  [SBD]

The Rolling Stones are an English band formed in London in 1962, originally comprised of Brian Jones (Guitar, Harmonica), Stones 1978 frontIan Stewart (Piano), Mick Jagger (lead vocals, harmonica), Keith Richards (Guitar), Bill Wyman (Bass), and Charlie Watts (Drums).  The mid 70’s were not the best of years for “The Greatest Rock and Roll Band In The World”.  The Stones’ albums during that period had not lived up to the standard set by 1972’s Exile on Main Street.  Drug problems plagued Keith.  Mick seemed more interested in the party life (he was a regular at Studio 54) than music.  Mick Taylor (Brian Jones’ replacement) quit the band.  As the punk scene took a leading role on rock’s stage, many depicted them as decadent, aging millionaires and criticized their Stones 1978 backmusic as stagnant.  All that changed in 1978.  The band struck back at their critics with a vengeance, releasing Some Girls in June of that year.  That album, with songs such as Miss You, Beast of Burden and Shattered, was easily the best Stones album since Exile, and ranks as one of the finest of their career.  Check out this soundboard recording, on 6 July 1978,  to relive the return of The Rolling Stones to the top of the rock world.

The Who – 1999-11-12 – The House of Blues, Chicago, IL [HQ-AUD]

The Who is an English rock band that formed in 1964.  Their most classic lineup consisted of Pete Townshend (guitar), the_Who__1999_11_12__Chicago,frontRoger Daltry (vocals), John Entwistle (bass), and Keith Moon (drums).  They are one of the most influential bands of the 20th century.  In late 1999, The Who played 7 shows ranging from an acoustic performanc3e at The Bridge School benefit to to a “dot.com” launch part in Las Vegas to a set of charity shows in Chicago to a pair of Christmas shows in London.  The two Chicago concerts took place at The House of Blues and benefited the nearby Maryville Academy.  Townshend had played solo benefit shows for the academy in prior years, helping to raise over $1 million.   The academy’s mission is to treat and support children who have been the_Who__1999_11_12__Chicago,backphysically, sexually, and/or emotionally abused.  The House of Blues shows were notable for resurrecting several songs that had rarely been played since the 1970s, including Pure and Easy, Getting in Tune, and I’m A Boy.  The shows also featured the first performances since 1989 of You  Better You Bet and Eminence Front.  This high quality audience recording captures the first show on 12 Nov 1999.  Check this one out to hear The Who in what turned out to be a warm up for their highly successful 2000 tour.

ACDC – 2015-06-07 – Stadion Letzigrund, Zurich [HQ-AUD]

ACDC is an Australian hard rock band that formed in 1973 by the brothers Angus and Malcolm Young.  ACDC 2015 FRONTAlthough they endured quite a few lineup changes in their over 40 years together, the one constant was the brothers Young.  That is, until recently.  Unfortunately, Malcolm has had to permanently retire from the band due to dementia.  Their last album is the first in their history without even one recorded track by Malcolm.  Malcolm Young has been replaced by his nephew Stevie Young.  He has previously filled in for his Uncle on the 1988 tour due to Malcolm falling sick.  Another bit of trouble surrounded drummer Phil Rudd.  He got into a bit of legal trouble in New Zealand over alleged drug possession and ACDC 2015 BACKattempted murder.  Therefore, he was removed from the band and unable to tour in support of the Rock or Bust album.  Chris Slade has replaced him.  No word if it’s a permanent replacement, but I suspect that it is.  This high quality audience recording was in Zurich on 7 Jun 2015, and was supplied by the Moonshiner a week or so after the concert date.  Check this one out, and then, go out and by the CD.  😉

This broadcast continues on our journey to the rocking seventies….

Eric Clapton – 1976-11-15 – Convention Ctr, Dallas, TX, KBFH [FM]

Eric Clapton is an English blues rock guitarist, singer and song writer.  He is the only three time inductee in the Eric Clapton 1976-11-15 Front CoverRock and Roll Hall of Fame, once as a solo artist, and separately as a member of the Yardbirds and Cream.  This bootleg is from Eric Clapton‘s  No Reason to Cry tour. In August 1976, Eric Clapton released the album No Reason to Cry, which featured contributions from all 5 members of The Band, as well as Bob Dylan.  The album went to #15 on the Billboard charts in the US.  Clapton launched his US tour in November, in support of that album.  Fittingly, the last stop on the tour was at The Band‘s farewell concert, the Last Waltz, on 26 November, 1976.  This soundboard recording captures Eric Eric Clapton 1976-11-15 Back CoverClapton about halfway through that tour, on 15 November, 1976.  Eric Clapton has been ranked second in Rolling Stone magazine’s “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” and fourth in Gibson’s “Top 50 Guitarists of All Time” as well as fifth in Time magazines list of “The 100 Best Electric Guitar Players”.  Among other awards, he is the recipient of 18 Grammys.

Jefferson Starship – 1976-07-14 – Colt Park, Hartford, CT [SBD]

Jefferson Starship was an American rock band that rose from the ashes of the psychedelic rock group, Jefferson AirplaneJefferson Starship ColtPark1976FrontIt is not to be confused with Starship, a spin off of Jefferson Starship featuring co-lead singer Mickey Thomas.  The latter group is usually identified with the ‘pop’ tunes of Jefferson Starship in the 80’s.  In 1975, Jefferson Starship released the album Red Octopus, which climbed to #1 on the Billboard charts.  The group also had a smash hit with the single Miracles, which reached #3 on the charts.  Expectations were high, therefore, when the band released its follow up album, Spitfire, in June 1976.  While not quite as successful as its predecessor, Spitfire did spend 6 consecutive weeks at #3 Jefferson Starship ColtPark1976Backon the charts and went platinum.  The band was so disappointed with that performance, however, that they requested a sales audit from RCA records.  To settle the matter, RCA agreed to invest $500,000 into the next Jefferson Starship project.  The band went on tour in support of Spitfire, including this show on  July 14, 1976.  Check out this great soundboard recording to hear the Starship when they could still rock, long before the disaster entitled “We Built This City“.

This broadcast continues our journey to the Rockin’ Seventies….

Foghat – 1976 – King Biscuit Flower Hour [FM]

Foghat is an English rock band formed in London in 1971 by members Dave Peverett (“Lonesome Dave”) on guitar and Foghat - King Biscuit Flower Hour frontvocals, Tony Stevens on bass, and Roger Earl on drums when they split from Savoy Brown in 1970.  Rod Price on guitar/slide guitar joined the band after he left the Black Cat Bones in December 1970.  Their debut 1972 album, Foghat, had a cover of Willie Dixon’s “I Just Want to Make Love to You“, which received heavy FM play rotation.  There were several under appreciated tracks on this initial album, including a remake of the Savoy Brown bluesy tune, “Leavin’ Again (Again!)” and “Sarah Lee“, a classic blues burner with a truly inspirational slide solo by Rod Price.   This concert was recorded Foghat-King-Biscuit-1976-Back-Coverfor and played on the King Biscuit Flower Hour in 1976 with the original band lineup, touring in support of the 1976 album, Night Shift.  It also includes a couple bonus tracks from 1974 as well.  This was truly Foghat at their best. The band has achieved 8 gold records, one platinum and one double platinum record, and continues to record and perform to the present day, despite several lineup changes.

Boston – 1977.03.19 – Long Beach Arena, Long Beach, CA, King Biscuit Flower Hour [FM]

Boston is an American rock band from Boston, MA that achieved their most notable successes during the Boston-LB-77-frontseventies and eighties.  Centered on guitarist, keyboardist, songwriter and producer Tom Scholz, the band is a staple of classic rock radio playlists.  Boston‘s best known works include the songs More Than a Feeling, Piece of Mind, Foreplay/Long Time, Rock and Roll Band, Smokin’, Don’t Look Back and Amanda.  They have sold over 31 million albums in the United States, of which 17 million were from their self-titled debut album and 7 million from their second album, Don’t Look Back.  Scholz actually started writing music in 1969 while attending MIT.  Boston-LB-77-backAfter graduating with a masters degree, he worked at Poloroid, and used his salary to build a studio in his basement.  He created a series of demo songs, with him playing all instruments instead of drums.  He signed a record deal, but had to do a live demo, so hurriedly put together a performing unit capable of reproducing the demos.  This concert was at the height of their popularity, and was recorded for the KBFH at Long Beach Arena, Long Beach, CA.

Derek and the Dominos – 1970.10.23 – Fillmore East, New York [HQ-AUD]

The Yardbirds.  Cream.  Blind Faith.  Delaney and Bonnie and Friends.  Eric Clapton has had historic turns with each of derek 10-23-1970 frontthose bands, not to mention an astounding solo career.  Yet, no moment in that legacy can top his brief time fronting Derek and the Dominos in 1970.  Sure, the band had only 1 album, but it just happened to be one of the finest in rock and roll history.  Slowhand, fueled by his unrequited love for Patti Harrison, and driven to play at his best by the presence of Duane Allman, produced his masterpiece, the 2 record set known as Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs.  After completing the album, the band toured the U.S. from October to December 1970, then Clapton went into a drug-induced exile for 3 years.  1970-10-23-fillmore-backFor those of us too young to see the Dominos live, CRAB fortunately has soundboard recordings of both of their October shows at the legendary Fillmore East.  This concert is the second show.  It’s a slightly different set list than the previous show, but what’s amazing is that neither night features Layla or Bell Bottom Blues, the 2 most well known songs from the album!  Classic versions of songs such as Let It Rain, Little Wing, and Got To Get Better In A Little While more than make up for these omissions.
