Peter Frampton – 1975-07-04 – Electric Ballroom, Dallas, TX [FM]

In the early 1970’s former Humble Pie guitarist Peter Frampton released four solo albums, none of which garnered Frampton - Dallas , 4 July 1975 - Frontmuch critical acclaim or commercial success. No one could have been prepared, therefore, for what transpired when he released his fifth album on 6 Jan 1976, a 2 album live recording.  Frampton Comes Alive came from out of nowhere to take the music world by storm.  With songs such as Baby I Love Your Way, Show Me the Way, and the mammoth 14 minute long, Do You Feel Like We Do, which featured Frampton’s distinctive talk box guitar.  Frampton Comes Alive clibed to the top of the Billboard charts, sold over 6 million copies, and was voted album of the year by the readers of Rolling Stone magazine.  Frampton - Dallas , 4 July 1975 - BackThe album was so popular that it was still in the #14 spot at the end of 1977, almost two years after its release!  The album defined Frampton for the rest of his career.  More significantly the album came to define rock and roll in the mid 1970’s.  FM rock stations began to play more ‘album oriented rock’ (AOR) as Frampton’s album and other similar work began to be called.  Check out this great FM broadcast to see how the face of rock was changing in the mid 1970’s.

Yes – 1994.08.11 – Orlando, FL [SBD]

What more could be said about Yes that hasn’t already been said in our month-long tribute to fallen Chris Squire, Yes 1994 Orlando Frontbassist.  He and Jon Anderson, vocalist, were the two founding fathers of the band Yes, so many years ago.  Squire has been a member of Yes all the way from the start until he was forced to resign from the band in May 2015 due to the acute leukemia that claimed his life on 27 Jun 2015.  He shall always be remembered and his presence in Yes shall be sorely missed.  This excellent soundboard recording is of the second classic lineup of Yes.  Trevor Rabin in place of Steve Howe on guitar, and Tony Kaye in place of Rick Yes 1994 Orlando BackWakeman on keyboards.  This is a triple cd bootleg, with the third cd containing bonus tracks from earlier that year on 29 Jun 1994 in Maryland Heights.  Check this one out to round out the different sounds of Yes in this month long tribute, from their start, to the original classic lineup, to the reunion lineup (with all eight members on stage), to this one of the second classic lineup.  Enjoy!!

The Police – 1979-04-05 – Fat Cats Club, Miami, FL [SBD]

The Police were an English rock band formed in London in 1977.  For the majority of their history, they were comprised of Police 1979.04.05 frontSting (bass), Andy Summers (guitar) and Stewart Copeland (drums). The Police are regarded as one of the first new wave bands to achieve mainstream success.  Their 1978 debut album, Outlandos d’Amour,  reached No. 6 in the UK, and their second album, Regatta de Blanc, became the first of five consecutive UK No. 1 albums.  Synchronicity,  from 1983 was No. 1 in both the UK and U.S., and sold over 8 million copies in the U.S. alone.  They disbanded in 1986, but reunited in early 2007 for a world tour that ended in August 2008.  They were the world’s highest-earning musicians in 2008, Police 1979.04.05 Backthanks to their reunion tour.  In early 1979, The Police went on tour in North America in support of their debut album, Outlandos d’Amour.  The tour kicked off at the legendary Whiskey A Go Go in Los Angeles and ran until May 25, with the band criss-crossing the US and Canada.  They often played 2 shows a night, and rarely took a night off.  Check out this broadcast to hear the Police at their first show on 5 Apr 1979, in their first US tour.

Dire Straits – 1979-03-06 – Tower Theater, Philadelphia, PA [SBD]

Dire Straits were a British band that was formed in 1977 by Mark and David Knopfler (lead and rhythm guitars, respectively), John Illsley (bass), and Pick Withers (drums).  Their career spanned a total of 15 years.  They broke up in 1988, but reformed in 1991.  They broke up for good in 1995, when Mark Knopfler pursued his solo career full-time.  In reviews of Sultans of Swing, Dire Straits‘ first big hit, often cited Mark Knopfler’s vocals as sounding like Bob Dylan.  When he saw Dire Straits for the first time in 1978, Dylan was so impressed that he invited Knopfler and drummer Pick Withers to play on his next album, Slow Train Coming.  Knopfler also played on the Dylan albums Infidels and Down In The Groove.  When Dire Straits launched the 2nd leg of their fall tour in October 1978, it marked their first extended run of shows outside of the UK.  The band visited France, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, promoting both their self-titled debut album and the single, Sultans of Swing.  A couple weeks ago, we heard a concert from that debut tour, but this week, we will catch a great soundboard recording from their tour in support of their second album, Communique. This was recorded at Tower Theater, Philadelphia, PA on 6 Mar 1979.

Yes – 1979-04-18 – Colisee Pepsi Quebec City, Canada [SBD]

Yes is an English band formed in 1968 by bassist Chris Squire and vocalist Jon Anderson.  Chris Squire took a hiatus from Yes in May of 2015, when he was diagnosed with acute erythoid leukemia.  Squire, unfortunately, passed away on 27 Jun 2015.  This is the last segment here on CRAB honoring Chris Squire, and we hope that you’ve enjoyed these concerts.  This concert, once again, features the original classic Yes lineup, comprised of Jon Anderson (vocals), Steve Howe (guitar), Chris Squire (bass), Rick Wakeman (keyboards), and Alan White (drums).  This soundboard recording was captured on 18 Apr 1979 in Quebec City, Canada.  This performance is as good Yes 1979.04.18 backas the sound quality, which makes for a real treat.  This bootleg has had some TLC in the remastering department, and is probably the best version of this you will hear.   This tour was in support of the Tormato album.  It should do fine to wet your appetite for next week’s final installment of CRAB‘s Yes tribute.  Next week, I shall be playing a bootleg from the second classic Yes lineup, with Trevor Rabin replacing Steve Howe, and Tony Kaye in place of Rick Wakeman.

King Crimson – 1974-07-01 – Live in Central Park, NYC, NY [SBD]

King Crimson is a progressive rock band that was formed in London in 1968.  With guitarist Robert Fripp as the only King Crimson NYC 74 Booklet 1consistent member (considered to be the leader), the band’s lineup has constantly changed throughout its existence, with 18 musicians and 3 lyricists having been members.  Some of the members have lasted for decades.  The debut lineup of King Crimson was influential, but short lived, having lasting for just under a year.  They established several of the ground King Crimson NYC 74 Backrules of British progressive rock.  During 1070 and 1971, there was a second unstable lineup exploring jazz, funk and chamber music.  It was during the third stable lineup during 1972 to 1974 that this soundboard concert was recorded prior to the first of Fripp-inspired hiatuses that were to occur.  This lineup was noted for containing elements of hard rock, jazz fusion, and harsh classical elements.  Check this great concert out to hear a piece of history.

Golden Earring – 1975-04-26 – Live at the Record Plant, Sausalito, CA  [KSAN-FM]

Golden Earring is a Dutch band formed in The Hague in 1961 as The Golden Earrings. (The ‘s’ was dropped in 1969.)  GoldenEarring-Live75-RecordPlant-FrontFor those who recently discovered Golden Earring, another unofficial bootleg, recorded during their golden era (1972-77). It was captured one day after the Winterland concert (which we heard here last week and you can check it out here), and was broadcast on KSAN-FM.  Golden Earring recorded this session at the Record Plant for the King Biscuit Flower Hour the day after the Winterland concert. It was really the occasion for the band to present their Switch album (6 of the 7 songs), one of  their GoldenEarring-Live75-RecordPlant-Backbest to the US.  The sound is not totally what we could hope for such a record studio recording.  Great band. It is sad to say that they don’t do anything really of any interest since their excellent Millbrook USA album in 2003.  Check out the preview below, or better yet grab the whole broadcast segment below, and make the judgement for yourself.

Yes  – 1991-07-21 – Jones Beach, Long Island, NY  [SBD]

Yes is an English progressive rock band formed in 1968 by bassist Chris Squire and vocalist Jon Anderson.  Yes 91 Ultimate Reunion frontThis is the continuation of our tribute here at CRAB to honor Chris Squire, who passed on 27 Jun 2015.  Union was the thirteenth studio album released by Yes.  The album was released on 30 Apr 1991, and involved the merger of two bands featuring current and previous members of Yes.  Yes, formed of Chris Squire, Trevor Rabin, Tony Kaye, and Alan White were joined by Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe (ABWH), formed of Jon Anderson, Bill Bruford, Rick Wakeman and Steve Howe.  Union was released to a mixed reception.  It reached number 7 in the UK and number 15 in the U.S.  Three singles were released from the album:  Yes 91 Ultimate Reunion backLift Me Up, Saving My Heart, and I Would Have Waited Forever.  The album is a collection of tracks written by each group separately.  The eight members do not play at once.  However, Yes supported Union with a tour featuring all eight members on stage at the same time.  This concert is from that tour, and was recorded on Jones Beach,  on 21 Jul 1991 for the ‘Ultimate Yes Reunion’

Jimi Hendrix – 1970-07-04 – 2nd Atlanta Intl. Pop Festival,  Byron, GA [SBD]

James Marshall ‘Jimi’ Hendrix was an American musician whose life was tragically cut short in 1970.  Jimi 07 04 1970 frontThis Independance Day broadcast starts out with Jimi Hendrix, 45 years ago at the second Atlanta International Pop Festival.  It was held near Middle Georgia Raceway in Byron, Georgia.  It was originally scheduled for 3 July to 5 July 1970, but the festival did not finish until near dawn on the 6th.  Like the Woodstock festival the previous summer, the event was promoted as “three days of peace, love and music”.  Also like Woodstock, it became an “open event” when the promoter threw admitted hordes of people without tickets out and once the crowds outside began to tear down the plywood fence that had been Jimi 07 04 1970 backerected around the concert site.  As a result, no accurate count is available for attendance at the festival, with estimates ranging from between 300,00 and 600,000.  Jimi Hendrix headlined the festival, playing to the largest American audience of his career.  He launched into his rendition of the Star Spangled Banner as a fireworks display began around midnight on 4 July 1970.  This soundboard recording captures Jimi’s performance, a highlight of what turned out to be his last tour before his tragic death later that year.  Check this out to hear one of his last rides into the sunset.

Yes  – 1971-07-24 – Yale Bowl, New Haven, CT  [SBD]

Yes is an English band formed in 1968 by bassist Chris Squire and vocalist Jon Anderson.  Chris Squire took a hiatus from Yes yes-yalebowl frontin May of 2015, when he was diagnosed with acute erythoid leukemia.  Squire, unfortunately, passed away on 27 Jun 2015.  This short performance, at the Yale Bowl, New Haven, CT on 24 Jul 1971 marks the first in a month-long tribute to Chris Squire, here on CRAB radio.  Of all the unofficial Yes recordings of all eras of the band that I’ve ever heard, this is my absolute, hands-down favorite.  It captures Yes on teh verge of tremendous world-wide success, playing in front of a large audience that they needed to reach.  Their excitement is tangible, and it comes through in their performance.  yes-yalebowl1 backYou may just note that the first few notes of “Yours Is No Disgrace,” which were lost when the recording started a few seconds late, have been reconstructed through a little clever splicing, using the same bars when they were repeated later in the performance.  The lineup for this excellent soundboard is: Jon Anderson (vocals), Bill Bruford (drums), Steve Howe (guitars), Tony Kaye (keyboards) and Chris Squire (bass).

Golden Earring – 1975-04-25  [VID – SBD]

Golden Earring is a Dutch rock band formed in 1961 in The Hague as the Golden Earrings (the “s” was dropped in 1969).  Golden Earring Winterland 1975 frontThis is the second time that I’ve played this on Happy Hour (this one is from a different source).  The first time was the first broadcast of Happy Hour on 3 Jan 2015.  Here is a testimony of what a great live band Golden Earring was in 1975, during its “golden era”, the time between Switch and To The Hilt. Although some of the solos are quite long, the new songs (those from Switch) do not allow the band to such indulgence and therefore most of the set is stunning.  Moreover, horns provide a welcome new power to the music.  It’s really a good thing shortly after this that Barry Hay quit playing flute, Golden Earring Winterland 1975 backas it was too much like Jethro Tull.    Some songs in this performance are far better than in studio (in particular “Vanilla Queen” and “Daddy’s Gonna Save My Soul“) whereas others are treated with respect and do not lose the strength of their studio versions.  Of course, “Radar Love” was a little too much with timeless improvisatios that are quite difficult to enjoy (notably the drum solo, but then who ever could manage a good drum solo but John Arana of the TAS group BTN?)  Enjoy this soundboard, and next week, we shall have their KSAN FM broadcast at the Record Plant performed a day later.
