Dire Straits – 1978-10-19 – Live at the Shouwburg, Rotterdam, Holland [SBD]

Dire Straits were a British band that was formed in 1977 by Mark and David Knopfler (lead and rhythm guitars, respectively), rotterdam-78-frontJohn Illsley (bass), and Pick Withers (drums).  Their career spanned a total of 15 years.  They broke up in 1988, but reformed in 1991.  They broke up for good in 1995, when Mark Knopfler pursued his solo career full-time.  In reviews of Sultans of Swing, Dire Straits‘ first big hit, often cited Mark Knopfler’s vocals as sounding like Bob Dylan.  When he saw Dire Straits for the first time in 1978, Dylan was so impressed that he invited Knopfler and drummer Pick Withers to play on his next album, Slow Train Coming.  Knopfler also played on the Dylan albums Infidels and Down In The Grooverotterdam-78-backWhen Dire Straits launched the 2nd leg of their fall tour in October 1978, it marked their first extended run of shows outside of the UK.  The band visited France, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, promoting both their self-titled debut album and the single, Sultans of Swing.  This  soundboard recording captures the band on 19 October 1978, the 2nd of 6 nights in the Netherlands at the very outset of their career.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers  – 1978-12-31 – Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, Santa Monica, CA  [SBD]

Tom Petty is an American musician, best known as the vocalist of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, as well as member, and co-founder of The Traveling Wilburys.  Around 1976, Petty fomed a band known as the Epics, later Petty 12 31 1978 Santa Monicato evolve into Mudcrutch, containing future Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench.  Although popular in the Gainesville area, they never broke into mainstream.  After Mudcrutch broke up, Petty went solo and Tench decided to form his own band.  Eventually, Petty and Campbell collaborated with Tench and fellow members Ron Blair and Stan Lynch, resulting in the first lineup of the Heartbreakers.  The band achieved far greater sucess in Britain.  The single “BreakdownPetty 12 31 1978 Santa Monica - backwas rereleased in 1977 and peaked at #40 in early 1978.  This concert is the New Year’s Eve show in Santa Monica, 1978, and Petty covers a classic party song, Shout.  Originally recorded by the Isley Brothers in 1959, the song experienced a new wave of popularity in 1978 thanks to a version by Otis Day and The Knights that was featured in the movie Animal House.  In fact, while Petty was playing this concert, The Blues Brothers were a few hundred miles north at Winterland, in San Francisco, leading in for the Grateful Dead.

The Runaways – 1978-01-07 – The Palladium, New York, NY  [FM]

In the mid 1970’s, 5 young women – Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Sandy West, Cherie Currie and Micki Steele (later replaced TheRunaways -Palladium78-Frontby Peggy Foster and then Jackie Fox) – formed a band and the rest as they say, is history.  Punk and Heavy Metal were two emerging genres and were not the exclusive domain of the boys of rock and roll.  They released their first album in 1976, then headlined shows with opening acts such as Cheap Trick, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and Van Halen.  In the summer of 1977, the bands selling more albums in Japan than The Runaways were ABBA, Kiss and Led Zeppelin.  They were mobbed by fans on their visit, and Joan Jett later described the mass hysteria as being like Beatlemania.  This FM broadcast captures the band at TheRunaways -Palladium78-Backthe Palladium in New York, NY on January 7, 1978.  By that point, Currie had left the band, and tensions were rising between the other members.  In addition, while The Runaways were far more popular overseas, they had yet to breakthrough in the US.  In just about a year, the band would break up, due to creative differences between Jett, who wanted the band to play more punk and new wave music, and Ford, who pushed to steer the group toward more hard rock and heavy metal.  Check this one and hear The Runaways at their peak, and get a glimpse of what Joan Jett and Lita Ford sounded like before their highly successful solo careers.

The Rolling Stones  – 1978-07-06 – Detroit Masonic Hall, Detroit, MI  [SBD]

The Rolling Stones are an English band formed in London in 1962, originally comprised of Brian Jones (Guitar, Harmonica), Stones 1978 frontIan Stewart (Piano), Mick Jagger (lead vocals, harmonica), Keith Richards (Guitar), Bill Wyman (Bass), and Charlie Watts (Drums).  The mid 70’s were not the best of years for “The Greatest Rock and Roll Band In The World”.  The Stones’ albums during that period had not lived up to the standard set by 1972’s Exile on Main Street.  Drug problems plagued Keith.  Mick seemed more interested in the party life (he was a regular at Studio 54) than music.  Mick Taylor (Brian Jones’ replacement) quit the band.  As the punk scene took a leading role on rock’s stage, many depicted them as decadent, aging millionaires and criticized their Stones 1978 backmusic as stagnant.  All that changed in 1978.  The band struck back at their critics with a vengeance, releasing Some Girls in June of that year.  That album, with songs such as Miss You, Beast of Burden and Shattered, was easily the best Stones album since Exile, and ranks as one of the finest of their career.  Check out this soundboard recording, on 6 July 1978,  to relive the return of The Rolling Stones to the top of the rock world.

The first segment of the broadcast was Vixen, live at the Music Hall, Koln, Germany, 19 Feb 91.  Vixen 91 FrontThis band was sometimes referrered to as the ‘female Bon Jovi’.  This band got its start in St. Paul Minnesota in 1980 by guitarist Jan Kuehnemund (while she was still attending high school).  In 1984, an early version of the band with Jan Kuehnemund, vocalist Janet Gardnet, and bassist Pia Maiocco (who later married Steve Vai), appeared in the movie Hardbodies as the band Diaper Rash.  Shortly before the band signed with EMI and recorded their debut album, the ‘classic lineup’ was formed.  This consisted of Kuehnemund (lead guitar), Janet Gardner (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Share Pedersen (bass), and Roxy Petrucci (drums).Vixen 91 Back  This concert was the Rev It Up tour, where they warmed up for bands such as Deep Purple and Kiss, as well as headlined a few of their own shows.  In mid 1991, Vixen disintegrated due to musical difference, but this was not the last of them as they reformed a couple of times.  The first, without Kuehnemund was 97-98 until they were sued by her.  The second time was in 2001, by Kuehnemund, and they are still playing today. The second segment of the broadcast was The Runaways, recorded live at the Agora, Cleveland, OH, 19 July 1976.Runaways - Agora 76 - Front  The Runaways were formed in 1975, and were together until 1979.  They were formed by drummer Sandy West and rhythm guitarist Joan Jett in late 1975.  They actually started out as a power trio with Micki Steele on bass guitar.  During this time, they were playing the party and club circuit in Los Angeles, CA.  They soon added lead guitarist Lita Ford (who originally auditioned for the bass position).  Micki Steele was replaced by Peggy Foster, and then quickly by Jackie Fox (who coincidentally originally tried out for lead guitar).Runaways - Agora 76 - Back   Cherie Curry was also added as the lead vocalist.  The Runaways were quickly signed by Mercury Records in 1976, and they released their debut album, The Runaways.  (This concert if from their initial tour.)  According to the documentary, Edgeplay – A film about The Runaways, each of the girls patterned themselves from their idols.  Cherie Currie patterned her look from David Bowie, Joan Jett after Suzi Quatro, Lita Ford as a cross between Jeff Beck and Ritchie Blackmore, Sandy West after Runaways-Agora76-InsideQueen drummer Roger Taylor, and Jackie Fox after Kiss’ Gene Simmons.  The Runaways never really attained great success in the US, instead gaining popularity overseas, especially Japan.   The band finally broke up in 1979 due to huge musical differences.  Joan Jett wanted to continue with the punk/glam metal sound, while Sandy West and Lita Ford wanted to move in more of a hard rock/heavy metal direction.  They never could compromise, so their last concert was New Year’s Eve 1978 at the Cow Palace, San Francisco, CA.   The third segment is a British heavy metal band, Girlschool.girlschool-kbfh-front  This  concert was recorded at the Brass A in Nashville, TN, 12 Jan. 1984.  Girlschool was formed in 1978, springing from a school band, Painted Lady.  They are the longest running all-female band, having been together for 37 years, with no breaks.  Despite frequent membership changes original members Kim McAuliffe, Enid Williams, and Denise Dufort are still members presently.  The only original member not currently in the band is lead guitarist and vocalist Kelly Johnson, who passed due to cancer in 2007.  Girlschool group 84In 1975, Painted Lady was formed by school friends Kim McAuliffe and Dinah ‘Enid’ Williams.  They added Tina Gayle (drums) and Dierdre Cartwright (lead guitar).  Dierdre left the band in 77 to form Tour de Force, and is now a renowned jass guitarist.  Rather than let the band break up, McAuliffe and Williams recruited Kelly Johnson and Denise Dufort in 1978 and changed their name to Girlschool.  The band achieved good success during the NWOBHM (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal).   This concert is from the Play Dirty (released in October of 1983), and was shortly before Kelly Johnson left the band (the first time) in 1984.  She quit justgirlschool-king-biscuit-flower-hour-presents-girlschool-1984-back prior to the completion of the Play Dirty US tour, which hurt album sales.  She returned to Girlschool in 1993, and remained until 2000, when she was diagnosed with spinal cancer.  Unfortunately, she passed away in 2007 after years of painful treatment for her cancer.  This tour came at a time when they ‘upgraded’ their look and sound to appeal to the US market.  The band was still a four piece band.  The final segment in the broadcast was Heart,Heart Calif Jam 78 Front 18 Mar 1978 at California Jam II.  This was requested by my high school friend, Debbie Butler Hoyle.  I know that Heart is not an all-female band, but they tend to come to mind when speaking about female bands due to the constant center (over several distinct lineups), Ann and Nancy Wilson.  The band actually traces its lineage to a band formed in 67 by bassist Steve Fossen and guitarist Roger Fisher called The Army and played in and around Bothell, WA.  In 69 after lineup changes, they changed its name to White Heart, dropping the ‘White’ in 1970.  When Ann Wilson joined, the name was changed to Heart Calif Jam 78 BackHocus Pocus.  Wison met Michael Fisher (Roger’s brother) and fell in love and followed him back to Canada.  Fossen and Fisher soon followed suit, and in 73, Heart was officially formed.  Ann’s sister joined in 1974, and soon became involved with Roger.  This concert wasn’t with that original lineup, but came at the height of their commercial success.  The band members at the time of California Jam II were: Roger Fisher (lead guitar, backing vocals), Steve Fossen (bass), Ann WAutosave-File vom d-lab2/3 der AgfaPhoto GmbHilson (vocals, flute, guitar, keyboards, percussion, violin, autoharp), Nancy Wilson (vocals, guitars, mandolin, keyboards, synthesizers, harmonica), Michael DeRosier (drums, percussion) and Howard Leese (guitars, bass, keyboards, synthesizers, mandolin, Autosave-File vom d-lab2/3 der AgfaPhoto GmbHrecorder, orchestra arrangements, autoharp, percussion, backing vocals).  Leese continues to tour with The Paul Rodgers Band and Bad Company.  This bootleg is a soundboard recording, and is of excellent quality.
