This broadcast continues our journey to the Rockin’ Seventies….

The Doors – 1970.08.31 – Isle of Wight Festival [SBD]

The Doors were an American rock band formed in 1965 in Los Angeles, with Jim Morrison (vocals), Ray Manzarek (keyboards), The Doors 1970-08-29Back Robby Krieger (guitar), and John Densmore (drums).  The band took its name from the title of Aldous Huxley’s  book The Doors of Perception This comusic. rock ncert is at the Isle of Wight Festival, Aug 1970.  For three straight years, from 1968 to 1970, the Isle of Wight, a small island just off the south east coast of England, was the site of major rock festivals attracting some of the biggest names in rock music.  The 1970 Isle of Wight Festival attracted over 600,000 people, making it the largest concert held to that point.  The massive nature of the event also meant that it would be islewight1970the last such show on the Isle of Wight for over 32 years.  In 1971, the British Parliament passed the “Isle of Wight Act” preventing gatherings of more than 5,000 people without a special permit.  The 1970 Festival lasted from 26-30 Aug, with the biggest names performing on the last two days. The Doors‘ whole show was played in almost total darkness as Jim Morrison refused to have spotlights on the band.  Another note about this concert.  The date of this show is often listed as Aug 30 or 31, but research seems to indicate that Aug 29 is the correct date.  Check out this great sounding soundboard recording of the sound of rock as it moved into a new decade.

Grand Funk Railroad – 1974-06-02 – LA Forum [SBD]

The band was formed in 1969 by Mark Farner (guitar, vocals) and Don Brewer (drums, vocals) from Terry Knight and the Pack, Grand Funk 1974-06-02 DVD Cover v.1 and Mel Schacher (bass) from Question Mark and the Mysterians.  After receiving recognition at the 1969 Atlanta Pop Music Festival, they were signed by Capitol Records.  Between 1970 and 1974, Grand Funk Railroad score 8 consecutive top ten albums (7 studio and 1 live) on the Billboard charts, including We’re An American Band, which went to #2 in 1973.  They also had two #1 singles, We’re an American Band and Locomotion GFR– as well as a #3 hit in Some Kind Of Wonderful.  During the band’s heyday, the general perception was that, although the critics hated them, audiences loved them.  This soundboard recording, one of the very few around, catches them with Craig Frost on keyboards (since he was added in 1972).  This was recorded at the LA Forum on 2 Jun 1974, and is a dvd rip.

The Guess Who – 1974-05-05 – Ambassador Theater, St. Louis, MO – KSHE [FM]

The Guess Who traces its roots back to a band formed in 1958 in Winnipeg by Chad Allan originally called Allan and the Guess Who 1974-05-06 frontSilvertones. In 1962, this was changed to Chad Allan and the Reflections.  At this point the band members were:  Chad Allan (lead vocals and guitar), Bob Ashley (keyboards), Randy Bachman (guitar), Jim Kale (bass) and Garry Peterson (drums).  In 1965, the band changed its name to Chad Allan and the Expressions.  It was in 1965 that they scored their first hit, released under the psuedonym Guess Who?, hoping to mask their identities and create mystique.  However, even after they revealed that they had released the song, the DJ’s continued giving credit to “Guess Who?“, forcing yet another name change.  Guess Who 1974-05-06 backThis is from the end of their Spring 74 tour, and one of the last tours containing the classic (and best) lineup, before guitarists Kurt Winter and Donnie McDougall departed (or were fired from) the band.  Even though a bass amp fries early on, forcing Burton Cummings to adlib a bit, this is by far one of the best Guess Who bootlegs that I’ve ever heard containing many of their classics, including a 20 minute rockin’ American Woman – Truckin’ – No Sugar Tonight medley.   As mentioned earlier, due to the mishap with the bass amp, Artificial Flowers and Sour Suite were played as solo piano pieces by Burton.

Led Zeppelin – 1975-02-13 – Nassau Coliseum, Nassau, Long Island NY [SBD]

Led Zeppelin was an English rock band formed in London in 1968 by Jimi Page (guitar), Robert Page (vocals), Led Zeppelin 1975-02-13 frontJohn Paul Jones (bass and keyboards) and John Bonham (drums).  The band’s heavy, guitar-driven sound was deeply rooted in psychedelics and blues and  earned them recognition as the forefathers of heavy metal.  This concert was a soundboard recording at the Nassau Coliseum on 13 Feb 1975.  When Led Zeppelin launched their North American tour, it had been almost 2 years since their last tour, the longest break from performing that the band had taken at that point in their career.  The tour had a bit of a rocky start, as guitarist Jimmy Led Zeppelin 1975-02-13 backPage was suffering from a broken finger that forced him to use a three finger playing technique during many of the early shows.  In addition, Robert Plant got a bad case of the flue early in tour, causing the cacellation of one show and negatively affecting his singing during several others. The band also needed to work out the kinks associated  with incorporating new material from their soon to be released Physical Graffiti.  When they reached NY in Feb, however, the band seemed to have overcome all these issues, playing as powerfully as they ever had.

Van Halen – 1980-05-01 – Capital Theatre, Largo, MD Soundboard

Van Halen is an American rock band that was formed in Pasadena, CA in 1974 by Eddie and Alex Van Halen.  van halen 80 toratoratora_front Actually Van Halen traces its roots a bit earlier in the seventies when Eddie and Alex started performing in their group the Broken Combs.  By 1972, they were performing shows as Genesis.  Genesis was actually a power trio comprised of Eddie Van Halen (guitar), Alex Van Halen (drums) and Mark Stone (bass).  They were renting audio gear from David Lee Roth, and asked him to join the band on vocals, thus saving rental fees.  In 1974, Michael Anthony replaced Stone on bass guitar and the name was initially changed to Mammoth before David Lee Roth named the band as Van Halen.  They went on to become highly popular, and by the early eighties van halen 80 toratoratora_backthey had become one of the most successful rock bands of the time.  This concert catches them on their skyrocketing ride to their most successful album, 1984.  This performance as any other Van Halen performance relied on Roth’s colorful commentary to place the listener ‘in the middle’ of the performance.  This was recorded on 1 May 1980 at the Capital Theatre in Largo, MD from the soundboard.

Uriah Heep – 1985-05-16 – Apollo Theatre, Glasgow, Scotland Soundboard

Uriah Heep is an English band formed in London in 1969 and during the seventies, heralded the UriahHeep-Glasgow85-Frontprogressive rock movement of the decade.  Uriah Heep’s progressive rock/heavy metal/fusion have always include strong keyboards and piercing vocals.  Uriah Heep, as well as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath had become ‘The Big 4’ of hard rock.  By the eighties, their fan base had declined to the point that they were a cult band in the UK and the US.  However, they still played to large venues in German, Russia, Scandinavia, Japan and other countries.   The band was then and still is all about Mick Box.  Uriah Heep’s origins go back to 1967, when Box formed a band called The StalkersUriahHeep-Glasgow85-BackHe added David Garrick (later to be Byron) shortly thereafter.  This concert is set in Glasgow, Scotland in 1985 and was recorded from the soundboard.  This performance was after David Byron was fired due to his drinking problem.  So, it is Peter Goalby on vocals.  As a matter of fact this concert was about three months after Byron passed away.

Led Zeppelin – 1973-05-28 – Sports Arena, San Diego, CA Soundboard

Led Zeppelin was an English rock band formed in London in 1968 consisting of Jimmy Page (guitar), Led Zeppelin San Diego 73 frontRobert Plant (vocals), John Paul Jones (bass and keyboards), and John Bonham (drums).  The band was together from 1968 until John Bonham’s death in 1980 from alcohol-related asphyxia.  The surviving members reunited in 1985, 1988, 1995, and 2007.  The 2007 Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert in London was by far the most successful reunion, with Jason Bonham behind the drums in place of his late father.  This concert is a soundboard recording of their performance at the Sports Arena in San Diego, CA on 28 May 1973.  This tour was in support of their fifth album, and the first on that they had named, Led Zeppelin San Diego 73 BackHouses of the HolyLed Zeppelin, is the second best selling band in the U.S., behind only The Beatles.  Each of their nine studio albums made it into the Billboard top ten, with six making it to number one.  They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, and the museum’s band biography states that they “were as influential in the seventies as The Beatles were in the sixties.”

Rainbow – 1982 – Live Between the Eyes – San Antonio, TX

Rainbow was formed as RitchieRainbow San Antonio 82 Front Blackmore was heading into different musical directions that Deep Purple wasn’t too keen on.  So, he collaborated with Ronnie James Dio and his band in early 75, and ended up recording Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow Feb-Mar 75.  The band’s name was inspired by the Rainbow Bar and Grill in Hollywood.  Ritchie was quite happy with the result and formally left Deep Purple in June of that year. (His last concert with Deep Purple was April in Paris.)  Dio finally left the band in 77 or 78, and Blackmore tried to recruit Ian Gillan, but instead ended up with Marbles vocalist, Graham Bonnet.  Rainbow San Antonio 82 BackThis began their big commercial success and Joe Lynn Turner replaced Bonnet by 81.  This splinter band was certainly one of the reasons that Deep Purple broke up in 76.  Former Deep Purple members floated between the groups.  At one time, Jon Lord was in Rainbow, and for this lineup, Roger Glover was on bass guitar.  This concert is a soundboard recording and was filmed for MTV and happened right at the height of Rainbow’s popularity.

Led Zeppelin – 1973.01.22 – Southampton University, Southampton, UK

Led Zeppelin was formed in 1968 from the ashes of The Yardbirds.  Jimmy Page joined The Yardbirds in 1966Led Zeppelin Southampton 73 Front, originally on bass guitar, but soon switched to, and shared lead guitar duties with Jeff Beck, until he left.  The Yardbirds’ final concert was July 68 and Page started work on putting together ‘The New Yardbirds’.  He recruited Robert Plant and John Bonham (both prior Band of Joy members), and John Paul Jones.   The New Yardbirds first took the stage on 7 Sep 68 in Denmark, and quickly released an album.  Page was served a cease and desist letter about using the name Yardbirds out of the Scandanavian arena.  In November of that year,  after they changed their name to Led Zeppelin they received a nice contract from Atlantic.  Led Zeppelin Southampton 73 BackThey started cranking out albums at a furious rate.  (Maybe this was part of their contract, I don’t know.)  Led Zeppelin and Led Zeppelin II (1969), Led Zeppelin III (1970), Untitled fourth album (1971), and Houses of the Holy ( 1973).  Zeppelin is the second best selling band in the US, with sales over 111.5 million units.  This concert is a soundboard recording, and was for the Houses of the Holy tour, and comes at a time when they had cemented their popularity with their fourth album.  According to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Led Zeppelin was as influential in the 70’s as the Beatles were in the 60’s.
