ZZ Top – 2008-07-18 – Festival des Vieilles Charrues, Carhaix, France FM

ZZ Top is an American blues rock band that was formed in Houston, TX in 1969 by Billy Gibbons (guitar and main lyricist), Greig Lanier (bass and organ), and Dan Mitchell (drums). They released their first single in 1969, and shortly after replaced Mitchell with Frank Beard of American Blues and Lanier with Billy Ethridge. However, Ethridge was unwilling to sign a recording contract and quit the band. Dusty Hill replaced him, and that lineup has survived to date. In 1971, they released ZZ Top’s First Album and it reflected their heavy blues roots. In 1972, they followed up with Rio Grande Mud, which failed dismally. 1973 brought them Tres Hombres, their first top ten album, and caused their popularity to soar. A far cry from the tour in support of Rio Grande Mud, when they played to mostly empty auditoriums. ZZ Top has become one of the best selling musical artists of all time, having sold in excess of 50 million units worldwide. This concert is an FM broadcast of a concert in France on 18 Jul 2008 and you can ‘feel’ their driving guitar work. ZZ Top is most definitely one of the world’s leading power trios, and totally amazing that they have managed to keep the same lineup for over four decades of recording and touring.

Cream – 1967-10-15 – The Grande Ballroom, Detroit, MI

Cream was a British blues rock, psychedelic rock power trio formed in London in 1966 by Jack Bruce (bass, vocals), Eric Clapton (guitar, vocals), and Ginger Baker (drums). In 1966, Clapton of the Yardbirds and John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers met Ginger Baker in the band the Graham Bond Organisation. Baker asked to join the new band that Clapton was forming. He said sure as long as they could bring Jack Bruce along. Bruce and Baker had played together in the Graham Bond Organisation and had developed a dislike of each other, but they put their differences aside, and Cream was formed. The band’s unofficial debut came at the Twisted Wheel on 29 Jul 1966. Their heavy, bluesy, psychedelic sound influenced the emergence of British bands such as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and the Jeff Beck Group. Their third album, Wheels of Fire, was the world’s first double album that attained platinum status. This concert was on 15 Oct 1967, in the Grande Ballroom in Detroit, and not in Nov 1968 as incorrectly listed on the jacket. The last three bonus tracks were at Winterland in San Francisco on 10 Mar 1968. In 1993, the band was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

West, Bruce & Laing – 1973-04-14 – Live in K-Town, Germany

West, Bruce & Laing were a power trio blues rock band formed by Leslie West (guitar and vocals) and Corky Laing (drums and vocals), both from the group Mountain. They were joined by ex-Cream Jack Bruck (bass, keyboards, harp and vocals) West and Laing are currently back in Mountain. The trio agreed to work together near the end of Mountain’s 72 tour when Felix Pappalardi announced that he would leave Mountain at the end of the tour, quite possibly due to his addiction to heroin. Bruce was viewed as a drop in replacement for Pappalardi, so this was basically Mountain mk II. They released two studio albums, Why Dontcha (1972) and Whatever Turns You On (1973). They officially announce their break up in early 1974, just before the release of their third album, Live ‘n’ Kickin’. In 2009, West and Laing briefly reformed the band, with Malcolm Bruce (Jack’s son) on bass under the name, West, Bruce Jr. and Laing. This concert was in Kaiserslautern, Germany on 14 Apr 1973. The Whatever Turns You On album sessions would be the last time the trio would play together, as they had become fairly nasty towards one another due to heroin use.

Whitesnake – 1978-11-07 – Victoria Hall, Hanley, Staffordshire, UK

Whitesnake is an English hard rock band formed by David Coverdale in 1978, after he left Deep Purple. The band had actually been working as his backing band on the White Snake and Northwinds tours, and was called The White Snake Band. Whitesnake was originally comprised of David Coverdale, Micky Moody, Bernie Marsden, Neil Murray, David “Duck” Doyle, and Brian Johnston. Keyboardist Pete Solley of Procul Harem replaced Johnston before their first album. Solley was replaced during recording sessions for their first LP by Jon Lord of Deep Purple. This concert was in support of that first album, Trouble, which was released in the autumn of 1978. A live album, Live at Hammersmith, was recorded on this tour, and released in 1979. Coverdale folded the band in 1990, stating that he was taking a ‘break’ from music. The very next year, though, he collaborated with Jimmy Page to release an album called Coverdale and Page. Coverdale reformed Whitesnake in 2002 for Whitesnake’s 25th anniversary. They are still together, to this day. VH1 ranked them as the 85th Greatest Hard Rock Band of all time.

Scorpions – 1979-09-16 – Lovedrive in Japan – Sun Plaza Hall, Tokyo, Japan

The Scorpions are a German heavy metal band originally founded in 1965 by rhythm guitarist Rudolf Schenker. Things really began to get moving when, in 1970, Michael Schenker and Klaus Meine joined the band. They recorded and released their debut album, Lonesome Crow, two years later. During the tour in support of this album, they played warm up for UFO. UFO was impressed with Michael’s guitar playing, enough that they recruited him immediately, right in the midst of that tour. They enlisted friend, Uli Roth’s help to fill in. After the tour, Michael’s departure caused the immediate breakup of the band. Rudolf Schenker, along with Klaus Meine, joined Uli Roth’s band, Dawn Road. However, rather than keep their name, they decided to adopt the Scorpions name since it was more widely known. This concert was in support of the 1979 album, Lovedrive. It was during the recording of this album that UFO let Michael go, and he returned to the Scorpions, causing Mathias Jabs to leave. This album, has been regarded as the pinnacle of their career. However, it was just a few dates into this tour when Michael’s fight with alcoholism caused his departure from this band. Mathias Jabs was brought back in to permanently replace Michael.

Van Halen – 1976-05-29 – Pasadena Convention Center, Pasadena, CA

Van Halen is an American hard rock band that was founded in 1972 in Pasadena, CA. The band was originally a power trio, comprised of Eddie Van Halen (guitars, lead vocals), Mark Stone (bass, backing vocals), and Alex Van Halen (drums). 1974 saw Michael Anthony replacing Stone and the addition of David Lee Roth on lead vocals. This lineup would stay active until 1985. In 1985, former Montrose frontman Sammy Hagar would replace David Lee Roth as vocalist. During their time with David Lee Roth at the helm, they continued their rise in popularity as a hard rock band. In later years, Wolfgang Van Halen, son of Alex Van Halen and Valerie Bertinelli, would replace Michael Anthony on bass guitar. This concert finds Van Halen at the Pasadena Convention Center in South Pasadena on 29 May 1976. This concert was fairly early in their career and proof as to why they achieved worldwide fame and popularity. They are one of the world’s best selling bands of all time, having sold more than 80 million units. They were voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006 and VH1 ranked them 7th on their list of the top 100 Hard Rock Artists of All Time. In 2003, they reunited with Hagar after a brief hiatus, and then in 2006, they reunited with David Lee Roth for a few years.

ACDC – 1977-12-07 – 110/220 – Live in Atlantic Studios

ACDC is an Australian hard rock band founded in 1973 by the brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. They continue to record and tour, however, Malcolm has had to depart in 2014 due to illness, and has been replaced by his nephew Stevie. Stevie Young has filleld in for Malcolm in the past on a tour due to Malcolm being unable to perform on that tour due to sickness. This concert was recorded live at Atlantic Studios in support of the album, Let There Be Rock. Even though bassist Mark Evans had played during the recording of that album, he had been replaced by Cliff Williams by this time. The other members of this play date were: Bon Scott (vocals), Angus and Malcolm Young (lead and rhythm guitars, respectively), and Phil Rudd (drums). Phil Rudd recorded the newest album, Rock or Bust, however due to legal issues has been replaced on the current tour by former ACDC drummer, Chris Slade. The Rock or Bust tour is due to start on 10 Apr 2015. The band set a new record in Germany by selling 300,000 tickets in 77 minutes. This tour celebrates the band’s 40th anniversary, and has already sold out many European dates, so don’t delay and get your tickets as soon as soon as you can.

Black Sabbath – 1974-04-06 – Ontario Motor Speedway, California Jam

Black Sabbath is an English hard rock band originally formed as a blues rock band in 1968 by founding members: Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass guitar), Ozzy Osbourne (vocals), and Bill Ward (drums). This lineup remained intact (except for a brief time that Dave Walker filled in for Ozzy) until Ozzy Osbourne was fired due to his rampant abuse of alcohol and drugs in 1979. Ozzy was initially replaced by Ronny James Dio, but in the years to come would see vocalists come and go, including Ian Gillan, Glenn Hughes and Tony Martin. Ozzy rejoined the original lineup to record Reunion, the first ‘official’ live album released with Ozzy. The ‘other’ live album released with Ozzy was Live at Last, recorded in 73, and released in 80 ‘unofficially’. It rose to 5 on the UK charts. Fairly amazing for a bootleg. Understandable, since MTV ranked Black Sabbath as the “Greatest Metal Band” of all time. VH1 placed Black Sabbath as 2nd in their “100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock“. This concert is at the first California Jam concert April 06, 1974.

Helloween – 1992-05-14 – Köln, Germany

Helloween was formed in 1984 in Hamburg, Germany by members of Iron Fist, Powerfool, and Gentry. The band is best described as Power Metal and has been a pioneering force in that genre, as well as instrumental in its creation. After their formation, they were quickly signed by Noise Records. They released their debut record, a self-titled EP in 1985, and later that year released an LP, Walls of Jericho. On their tour supporting this album, it became apparent that Kai Hansen, their lead guitarist/vocalist had troubles singing while playing. So, they picked up vocalist Michael Kiske, from a local band III Prophecy. They immediately started work on the albums that would permanently carve out the new genre, Power Metal. These albums were Keeper of the Seven Keys Part I and Keeper of the Seven Keys Part II, released in 1987 and 1988. Kai Hansen left the band unexpectedly during the tour supporting Keeper of the Seven Keys Part I and in the early nineties there was a rift in the band that was worsening. This concert was in support of Pink Bubbles Go Ape, and although the album bombed, this concert is before Kiske got fired and most definitely worth the listen.

Ted Nugent – 1981 – Los Angeles, CA

Ted Nugent really got his start in The Amboy Dukes, although he has been performing since 1958. The Amboy Dukes first performed at The Cellar, in Illinois while Ted Nugent was still attending St. Viator High School. In 1967 they released The Amboy Dukes, in 1968 Journey to the Center of the Mind, and in 1969 Migration. The Amboy Dukes would release four more albums before Ted Nugent would drop ‘The Amboy Dukes’, and just be billed as Ted Nugent in 1975. In April 1968, Ted Nugent joined a host of other musicians to pay tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. by holding a blues, folk and rock jam session. Among the musicians were Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchel, Cactus, and BB King, to name a few. In 1975, after breaking off from The Amboy Dukes, he released Ted Nugent, Free-For-All, and Cat Scratch Fever in 1975, 1976 and 1977, respectively. These multi-platinum albums cemented Ted’s fan base. Many of them never even realized that he had started with The Amboy Dukes. This initial solo band survived until 1978, when the guitarist and bassist departed. They were replaced, and that brings us to this Los Angeles 1981 concert, which was in support of the 1980 album Scream Dream.

UFO – 1976-05-03 – The Starwood Club, Hollywood, CA

UFO was an English heavy metal group that transitioned from hard rock to heavy metal. It was formed in 1969 by Phil Mogg (vocals), Pete Way (bass), Mick Bolton (guitar), and Andy Parker (drums). The early work of UFO was strongly influenced by space rock. They gained far more popularity in Japan and Germany, than their poor turnout in the UK and the US. Bolton left the group in 1972, and they tried a couple guitarists before settling on the Scorpions Michael Schenker, then 18 years old. The Schenker years are regarded as UFO’s best. Michael Schenker intially was a member from June 1973 through October 1978. He briefly returned to the Scorpions ,before forming the Michael Schenker Group. Schenker returned to UFO in the following years: 1993–95, 1997–98, 2000, 2001–03. There really are no members that have been constant through UFO’s history, and as you would imagine, their ‘sound’ has changed with their membership. They have truly morphed into a remarkable band, and have just released an album in Feb 2015, Conspiracy of Stars. If you haven’t done it already, check youtube, as the album has been uploaded. This concert was at the Starwood Club in Hollywood, CA on 3 May 1976, the same month that they released No Heavy Petting.

Blue Öyster Cult – 1981-12-15 – Country Club Resada, Los Angeles

Blue Öyster Cult was formed in Long Island, NY, not as Blue Öyster Cult, but as Soft White Underbelly in 1967. They were mainly performing in the vicinity of Stony Brook University on Long Island. Manager Sandy Pearlman was trying to forge the band into the American answer to Black Sabbath. The band actually recorded an album’s worth for Elektra in 1968, but it was not released. 1969 brought a series of name changes for the band, prompted by Pearlman. First to Oaxaca, then, they chose Stalk-Forest Group and promptly recorded an album in 1970, but it wasn’t officially released in 2001 as St. Cecilia: The Elektra Recordings. A few more name changes, including Santos Sisters before the band settled on Blue Öyster Cult in 1971 and then released their debut self-titled album in 1972. They then released one album per year until 1981. They had some songs that received great FM radio play, such as (Don’t Fear) The Reaper, and Godzilla, which helped to boost their popularity and cult following. This concert was at the height of their popularity, touring in support of Fire Of Unknown Origin. This album contained several songs for the movie, Heavy Metal, although Veteran Of The Psychic Wars was the only one used in the movie.

Foghat – 1980-07-18 – Chicago

Foghat is a British rock band, formed in London in 1971, best described as blues rock. The band featured electric slide guitar and achieved its highest popularity in the seventies in the US. In 1971, former Savoy Brown members, Dave “Lonesome Dave” Peverett (guitar and vocals), Tony Stevens (bass), and Roger Earl (drums) teamed up with former Black Cat Bones member, Rod Price (guitar/slide guitar) to form Foghat. Their debut self-titled album was released in 1972, and contained a remake of Willie Dixon’s I Just Want to Make Love to You. This song received loads of FM radio airplay, and help catapult this band into the public’s eye. This band saw quite a few gold, platinum and double platinum albums through the seventies. They changed bass players a few times, and finally Rod Price left the band in late 1980. This concert was in support of the Tight Shoes album, released in May 1980. Unfortunately, two of the founding fathers have passed away: “Lonesome Dave” Peverett passed away in Feb 2000 due to kidney cancer, and Rod Price passed away in March 2005 due to a fall resulting from a heart attack. Foghat has never stopped touring or recording, and Roger Earl is still a band member.

Deep Purple – 1996-06-23 – Dynamo Stadium – Moscow, Russia [FM Broadcast]

Deep Purple is an English rock band formed in 1968 in Hertford, England. The band saw several lineup changes in the years before their eight year hiatus from 1976-1984. These lineups during the years 1968-1976 are commonly referred to as Mark I, II, III and IV. Deep Purple were ranked 22nd on VH1’s Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. They have been nominated in October 2012, and then again in October 2013 for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but weren’t voted in. Deep Purple, along with Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath, have been referred to as “The unholy trinity of British hard rock and heavy metal in the early to mid-seventies”. Their Mark II lineup was by far the most successful of their lineups. This configuration was comprised of Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Ian Gillan (vocals), Jon Lord (organ), Roger Glover (bass), and Ian Paice (drums). This concert is basically that lineup, with the exception that Steve Morse replaces Blackmore. This membership has been the most stable in the band’s history, and after Jon Lord’s retirement in 2002, left Ian Paice as the band’s only original member. Lord unfortunately passed away in July 2012 due to pancreatic cancer and a pulmonary embolism.

Triumph – 19 Aug 1979 – Agora Ballroom, Chicago, IL

Triumph was formed in 1975 in Toronto, Canada and were often billed as ‘The Other Rush’. After the trio got together, they took Canada and the US by storm. Triumph has received 18 gold and 9 platinum awards in North America. Triumph’s first concert was Simcoe High School in Sept 1975 and by Aug 1978, they were headlining at the Canada Jam Festival, playing before 110,000 people. They quickly signed with Attic Records and RCA (serving Canada and the US, respectively). Their first self-titled album was released in 1976, but was renamed to In The Beginning later. This concert was in support of their third album, Just A Game, which was released on 30 Mar 1979. Their first gold award was for this album, and was just two days later on 1 Apr 1979. This was NO April Fools joke, either. This album contained their first big hit, Hold On, which rose to 38 in the Billboard 100. More significantly, this album also contained Lay It On The Line, which has become the most widely played and recognized song in Triumph’s career in spite of their unpopularity with rock critics. Rolling Stone reviewers labeled them ‘a faceless band’. Regardless, they are amongst a few other Canadian bands that have achieved stardom.

Wolfmother – 15 Oct 2005 – Auckland, New Zealand

Wolfmother was formed in 2004 as a power trio. They quickly were noticed and signed by an Austrailian record label, Modular Recordings, and released their debut self-titled EP. The band moved to L.A. and began work on their self-titled LP, which was released Oct. 2005. The album entered the ARIA albums chart at its highest point, number 3 and remained on the chart until 2007, at which point it had been certified platinum five times. This bootleg was the day before the release of that album.

Rush – 1980 – St. Louis

Rush is a Canadian hard rock power trio formed in August 1968 in Toronto, Ontario by Jeff Jones (bass guitar, lead vocals, and keyboards), Alex Lifeson (guitar, backup vocals), and John Rutsy (drums and percussionist). Geddy Lee replaced Jones before their second performance. Immediately after the release of their self-titled debut album, and two weeks before the start of their first US tour, Neil Peart replaced Rutsy due to health issues stemming from Rutsy’s diabetes. Their first concert, August 14, 1974 was opening for Uriah Heep and Manfred Mann before an audience of 11,000. In the late seventies, Rush began to become inspired by progressive rock bands such as Yes and King Crimson. This concert was for the tour for the album Permanent Waves and was a shift in style for Rush. It contained shorter songs such as Freewill and The Spirit of Radio to promote more radio airplay and helped to propel it to become their first top five album to date. Rush was well on their way to achieving the peak of their popularity which occurred in 1981 with the release of Moving Pictures. The lyrics of that album’s Tom Sawyer were written by Toronto band Max Webster’s lyricist, Pye Dubois during a collaboration with Rush.

Grand Funk Railroad – 23 Dec 1972 – Madison Square Garden

How can one mention power trios without including Grand Funk Railroad in the conversation? 1972 was a time of change for Grand Funk. They fired Terry Knight in early 72 sparking a lengthy court fight. At one point, Knight seized their gear before a Madison Square Gardens concert (probably this one). They added Craig Frost on keyboards and released Phoenix with him. Eventually, they would return as a power trio again….. They replaced Knight with Todd Rundgren and the result was their two #1 hits, We’re an American Band and The Loco-motion from their next two albums.
