Blue Öyster Cult – 1981-12-15 – Country Club Resada, Los Angeles

Blue Öyster Cult was formed in Long Island, NY, not as Blue Öyster Cult, but as Soft White Underbelly in 1967.  They were mainly performing in the vicinity of Stony Brook University on Long Island.  Manager Sandy Pearlman was trying to forge the band into the American answer to Black Sabbath.  The band actually recorded an album’s worth for Elektra in 1968, but it was not released.  1969 brought a series of name changes for the band, prompted by Pearlman.  First to Oaxaca, then, they chose Stalk-Forest Group and promptly recorded an album in 1970, but it wasn’t officially released in 2001 as St. Cecilia:  The Elektra Recordings.   A few more name changes, including Santos Sisters before the band settled on Blue Öyster Cult in 1971 and then released their debut self-titled album in 1972.  They then released one album per year until 1981.  They had some songs that received great FM radio play, such as (Don’t  Fear) The Reaper, and Godzilla, which helped to boost their popularity and cult following.  This concert was at the height of their popularity, touring in support of Fire Of Unknown Origin.  This album contained several songs for the movie, Heavy Metal, although Veteran Of The Psychic Wars was the only one used in the movie.

Foghat – 1980-07-18 – Chicago

Foghat is a British rock band, formed in London in 1971, best described as blues rock.  The band featured electric slide guitar and achieved its highest popularity  in the seventies in the US.  In 1971, former Savoy Brown members, Dave “Lonesome Dave” Peverett (guitar and vocals), Tony Stevens (bass), and Roger Earl (drums) teamed up with former Black Cat Bones member, Rod Price (guitar/slide guitar) to form Foghat.  Their debut self-titled album was released in 1972, and contained a remake of Willie Dixon’s I Just Want to Make Love to You.  This song received loads of FM radio airplay, and help catapult this band into the public’s eye.  This band saw quite a few gold, platinum and double platinum albums through the seventies.  They changed bass players a few times, and finally Rod Price left the band in late 1980.  This concert was in support of the Tight Shoes album, released in May 1980.  Unfortunately, two of the founding fathers have passed away:  “Lonesome Dave” Peverett passed away in Feb 2000 due to kidney cancer, and Rod Price passed away in March 2005 due to a fall resulting from a heart attack.  Foghat has never stopped touring or recording, and Roger Earl is still a band member.

Deep Purple – 1996-06-23 – Dynamo Stadium – Moscow, Russia [FM Broadcast]

Deep Purple is an English rock band formed in 1968 in Hertford, England.  The band saw several lineup changes in the years before their eight year hiatus  from 1976-1984.  These lineups during the years 1968-1976 are commonly referred to as Mark I, II, III and IV.  Deep Purple were ranked 22nd on VH1’s Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.  They have been nominated in October 2012, and then again in October 2013 for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but weren’t voted in.  Deep Purple, along with Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath, have been referred to as “The unholy trinity of British hard rock and heavy metal in the early to mid-seventies”.  Their Mark II lineup was by far the most successful of their lineups.  This configuration was comprised of Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Ian Gillan (vocals), Jon Lord (organ), Roger Glover (bass), and Ian Paice (drums).  This concert is basically that lineup, with the exception that Steve Morse replaces Blackmore.  This membership has been the most stable in the band’s history, and after Jon Lord’s retirement in 2002, left Ian Paice as the band’s only original member.  Lord unfortunately passed away in July 2012 due to pancreatic cancer and a pulmonary embolism.
