Dio – 1984.10.05 – Hammersmith, London, UK [FM]
Dio was an American heavy metal band formed in 1982 and led by vocalist Ronnie James Dio, after he left Black Sabbath with intentions to form a new band with fellow former Black Sabbath member, drummer Vinny Appice. The name Dio was chosen because it made sense from a commercial standpoint, as the name was already well known at that time. The band dissolved in 2010 when Ronnie James Dio died of stomach cancer at the age of 67. When being interviewed by Classic Rock Magazine from the UK, Dio guitarist Craig Goldy stated “We were working on tracks for a new Dio album just before Ronnie died in May. And we did almost finish one song. Wendy [Dio, Ronnie’s widow/manager] has been talking about reissuing [DIO‘s] ‘Magica‘ album (originally released in 2000) with bonus tracks, including this one.” Goldy goes on to say of the lyrics, that they were written by Dio when he was fighting cancer, and are “very emotional” and “hard to listen to without a lump at the back of your throat”. On March 18, It was announced that the surviving members of the final line-up of Dio would embark on a project with former Judas Priest front man Tim “Ripper” Owens under the moniker DIO Disciples. The project has been touring extensively since 2011.
Dokken – 1988.04.21 – Yokohama, Japan [SBD]
Dokken are an American metal band formed in 1979. They split up in 1989 and reformed four years later. The classic Dokken line-up consisted of founder Don Dokken on vocals, George Lynch on lead guitar, Mick Brown on drums and Jeff Pilson, who replaced the Ratt-bound Juan Croucier in early 1984, on bass, This line-up remained stable from 1984 to 1989, and again from 1993 to 1997; only Dokken and Brown now remain. After several personnel changes on guitar, Dokken’s attorney Jon Levin stepped in to fill the role in 2004. In 2001, Barry Sparks replaced Pilson on bass. In 2009, Sean McNabb (formerly with Great White and Quiet Riot) replaced him, and was then replaced by Chris McCarvill in 2015. Back for the Attack was released on November 27, 1987, with the singles Burning Like a Flame (#20), Heaven Sent and Prisoner making the album the band’s most successful release, reaching No. 13 on U.S. charts. After releasing Back for the Attack, the band toured as part of the Monsters of Rock Tour 1988 festival in the summer of 1988 along with Van Halen, Scorpions, Metallica, and Kingdom Come. Recordings from their April 1988 tour in Japan led to the release of live album Beast from the East on November 16, 1988, which went Gold in the United States. This soundboard bootleg finds Dokken touring in support of Back for the Attack, and just before the Monsters of Rock Tour.
Deep Purple – 1985.07.08 – Paris, France [SBD]
Deep Purple is an English rock band formed in 1968 in Hertford, England. The band saw several lineup changes in the years before their eight year hiatus from 1976-1984. These lineups during the years 1968-1976 are commonly referred to as Mark I, II, III and IV. Deep Purple were ranked 22nd on VH1’s Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. They have been nominated in October 2012, and then again in October 2013 for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but weren’t voted in. Deep Purple, along with Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath, have been referred to as “The unholy trinity of British hard rock and heavy metal in the early to mid-seventies”. Their Mark II lineup was by far the most successful of their lineups. This configuration was comprised of Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Ian Gillan (vocals), Jon Lord (organ), Roger Glover (bass), and Ian Paice (drums). This concert is that lineup, shortly after they reunited in 1985. This membership has been the most stable in the band’s history, and after Jon Lord’s retirement in 2002, left Ian Paice as the band’s only original member. Lord unfortunately passed away in July 2012 due to pancreatic cancer and a pulmonary embolism.
