Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers  – 2003-04-19 – Vic Theater, Chicago, IL  [SBD]

Tom Petty is an American musician, singer, and songwriter best known as the lead singer of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, but he is also known as member and co-founder of The Traveling Wilburys under the pseudonymns Charlie T. Wilbury, Jr. and Muddy Wilbury.   Shortly after forming his musical aspirations, Petty started a band known as the Epics, later to evolve into Mudcrutch.  Although the band, which featured future Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench, were popular in Gainesville, their recordings went unnoticed by a mainstream audience. However, their only single, “Depot Street“, remains popular amongst fans. The original Mudcrutch included guitarist Danny Roberts who was later replaced by bassist Charlie Souza.  After Mudcrutch split up, Petty reluctantly agreed to pursue a solo career. Tench decided to form his own group, whose sound Petty appreciated. Eventually, Petty and Campbell collaborated with Tench and fellow members Ron Blair and Stan Lynch, resulting in the first lineup of the Heartbreakers. Petty went on to The Traveling Wilburys from 1988 – 1991, at which time, the Heartbreakers reunited.  This soundboard recording catches them over ten years later at the Vic in Chicago.

Rush – 1996-12-05 – The Summit, Houston, TX [SBD]

Rush is a Canadian hard rock power trio formed in August 1968 in Toronto, Ontario by Jeff Jones (bass guitar, lead vocals, and keyboards), Alex Lifeson (guitar, backup vocals), and John Rutsy (drums and percussionist).  Geddy Lee replaced Jones before their second performance.  Immediately after the release of their self-titled debut album, and two weeks before the start of their first US tour, Neil Peart replaced Rutsy due to health issues stemming from Rutsy’s diabetes.  Their first concert,  August 14, 1974 was opening for Uriah Heep and Manfred Mann before an audience of 11,000.  In the late seventies, Rush began to become inspired by progressive rock bands such as Yes and King Crimson.  This concert was for the tour for the album Test For Echo and is proof evident that Rush has indeed become a progressive rock supergroup.  This is a great soundboard recording at The Summit in Houston, TX on 05 Dec 96.  Check this one out to hear this powerhouse power trio!
