The first concert segment was Deep Purple 1991, Sao Paulo, Brazil.  Deep Purple was formed in 1968, originally as a progressive rock band, moving on to hard rock in 1970.  They were listed in the 1975 Guinness Book of World Records as “the globe’s loudest band” for a 1972 concert in the Rainbow Theatre, London.  The band has seen quite a few lineup changes.  The early ones from 1968-1976, until their breakup, were referred to as Mark I, II, III, and IV.  Their second lineup, (1969-1973, 1984-1989, and 1992-1993) was by far their most successful, and was attributed to causing their success.  These members were:  Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Roger Glover (bass), Ian Gillan (vocals), Jon Lord (keyboards), and Ian Paice (drums).  Joe Lynn Turner handled the vocals between 1989 and 1992, until Ian Gillan rejoined.  After Lord’s retirement, and subsequent passing, Ian Paice is the only original band member.  The current lineup is:  Steve Morse (guitar), Roger Glover (bass), Ian Gillan (vocals),  Ian Paice (drums), and Don Airey (keyboards).

The next concert segment of the broadcast was CD 12 (of 13) of ACDC the Complete Soundboard Collection with Bon Scott 1976-1979.  Bon Scott took over lead vocalist duties from Dave Evans in 1974, until his untimely death in London Feb. 1980 after a night of hard drinking.  Bon Scott helped propel the band’s popularity high on the charts with the ‘Highway to Hell‘ tour in 1979.  This concert is a soundboard recording from that tour.  It was recorded at the Hammersmith, Odeon in London on 2 Nov. 1979.  As the liner notes state, this is the complete concert, but has never been broadcast completely, even though it had been broadcast previously on the BBC.  This is some of ACDC and Bon Scott’s finest work, and guaranteed them a place in the charts for years to come.  No one can ever replace Bon Scott, even though Brian Johnson did a fine job on Back in Black (which was a tribute to Bon), and on successive albums.

The last concert segment of the broadcast was Judas Priest Breaking the Law 1981.  Judas Priest was formed in 1969.  In 2006, MTV rated them as the second Greatest Metal Band of all time.  They were best known for their twin lead guitars and their vocalist’s operatic style.  The band’s largest success was during the years 1979-1989 with the lineup Rob Halford (vocals), K.K. Downing (guitar), Glenn Tipton (guitar, keyboards), Ian Hill (bass), and Dave Holland (drums).  It was during this period in 1980 that the album British Steel helped them to soar in the charts.  It was at the end of this period in 1989 when they[/UAS_loggedin] were named as defendants in an unsuccessful lawsuit that alleged that subliminal messages on their albums caused two young men to commit suicide via shotgun after a night of drinking, smoking pot, and listening to Priest.  This concert was the Point of Entry tour, Chicago, 21 Jun 1981 and came on the heels of British Steel.  This concert catches the band at their heyday as their success was peaking.  (Their best selling album was the 1982 Screaming for Vengeance.)
