The first concert segment was Deep Purple 1991, Sao Paulo, Brazil.  DP Sao Paulo 1991 FrontDeep Purple was formed in 1968, originally as a progressive rock band, moving on to hard rock in 1970.  They were listed in the 1975 Guinness Book of World Records as “the globe’s loudest band” for a 1972 concert in the Rainbow Theatre, London.  The band has seen quite a few lineup changes.  The early ones from 1968-1976, until their breakup, were referred to as Mark I, II, III, and IV.  Their second lineup, (1969-1973, 1984-1989, and 1992-1993) was by far their most successful, and was attributed to causing their success.  These members were:  Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Roger Glover (bass)DP Sao Paulo 1991 Back, Ian Gillan (vocals), Jon Lord (keyboards), and Ian Paice (drums).  Joe Lynn Turner handled the vocals between 1989 and 1992, until Ian Gillan rejoined.  After Lord’s retirement, and subsequent passing, Ian Paice is the only original band member.  The current lineup is:  Steve Morse (guitar), Roger Glover (bass), Ian Gillan (vocals),  Ian Paice (drums), and Don Airey (keyboards).

 

The next concert segment of the broadcast was CD 12 (of 13) of ACDC the Complete Soundboard Collection with Bon ScottACDC Soundboard Front 1976-1979.  Bon Scott took over lead vocalist duties from Dave Evans in 1974, until his untimely death in London Feb. 1980 after a night of hard drinking.  Bon Scott helped propel the band’s popularity high on the charts with the ‘Highway to Hell‘ tour in 1979.  This concert is a soundboard recording from that tour.  It was recorded ACDC Soundboard Int10at the Hammersmith, Odeon in London on 2 Nov. 1979.  As the liner notes state, this is the complete concert, but has never been broadcast completely, even though it had been broadcast previously on the BBC.  This is some of ACDC and Bon Scott’s finest work, and guaranteed them a place in the charts for years to come.  No one can ever replace Bon Scott, even though Brian Johnson did a fine job on Back in Black (which was a tribute to Bon), and on successive albums.

 

The last concert segment of the broadcast was Judas Priest Breaking the Law 1981.  Judas Priest was formed in 1969.  Judas Priest Breaking The Law frontIn 2006, MTV rated them as the second Greatest Metal Band of all time.  They were best known for their twin lead guitars and their vocalist’s operatic style.  The band’s largest success was during the years 1979-1989 with the lineup Rob Halford (vocals), K.K. Downing (guitar), Glenn Tipton (guitar, keyboards), Ian Hill (bass), and Dave Holland (drums).  It was during this period in 1980 that the album British Steel helped them to soar in the charts.  It was at the end of this period in 1989 when theyJudas Priest Breaking The Law back[/UAS_loggedin] were named as defendants in an unsuccessful lawsuit that alleged that subliminal messages on their albums caused two young men to commit suicide via shotgun after a night of drinking, smoking pot, and listening to Priest.  This concert was the Point of Entry tour, Chicago, 21 Jun 1981 and came on the heels of British Steel.  This concert catches the band at their heyday as their success was peaking.  (Their best selling album was the 1982 Screaming for Vengeance.)

ACDC, Alice Cooper, Bachman Turner Overdrive

The first segment was Alice Cooper, 1980, El Paso, TX from the Flush the Fashion tour.

alice cooper 1980Vincent Damon Furnier, Alice Cooper, started his musical career in 1964 in a band called The Spiders.  (It was called the Earwigs before they actually learned to play instruments, and instead mimed Beatles songs for a talent show.)  The Spiders released their first single in 1965.  In 1966, after the band graduated from high school, they released their second single.  In 1967, they were starting to travel outside of Arizona, and renamed themselves Nazz.  This name was shortlived, and in 1968 when the band discovered that Todd Rundgren’s band was also named Nazz.  So, Alice Cooper was born.

Alice Cooper’s first big hit was I’m Eighteen in 1971, followed by an even larger hit in 1972, School’s Out.  The band quickly reached their peak in 1973 with Billion Dollar Babies.  Furnier took the band’s name as his own, legal, name and went solo in 1975.  By 1977, alcoholism and drug use had taken its toll, and he put himself into a sanitarium for treatment.  This concert in El Paso, TX was on the heels of leaving the sanitarium in 1978, and was probably the best (or one of the best) lineups of Alice Cooper.

The next segment was supposed to be Bon Scott Forever Volume I, but somehow Volume II got into the playlist in its place.

bsf02-frontBon Scott was the second lead vocalist for ACDC, taking over for Dave Evans in 1974.  Bon had originally tryed out for the drummer position, which is what he did in his earlier bands, The Valentines and Fraternity.

Bon Scott was rated in the July 2004 issue of Classic Rock as number one in a list of the “100 Greatest Frontmen Of All Time”

ACDC rapidly rose in popularity, and were on the brink of a total commercial breakthrough, with bsf02-backthe release of the 1979 album, Highway to Hell.  Sadly, though,  Bon Scott passed away 19 Feb 1980 after a night of heavy partying in the UK.

Volume II of this bootleg set, not only contains Ride On, recorded by Bon Scott with Trust (His last known recording.), but also contains the original radio broadcast of the news of Bon’s death.

 

The last segment was Bachman Turner Overdrive Live at Harpo’s, Detroit, MI

BTOSadly, this bootleg has no cover art.  However, I just came into another BTO bootleg from Harpo’s 1984-07-01 with full cover art, and will broadcast that one sometime in the future.   This BTO lineup was Randy Bachman, C.F. Turner, Tim Bachman, Garry Peterson (was in the Guess Who with Randy), and Billy Chapman.  This concert took place at Harpo’s in Detroit, MI on 1 Apr 1984.

Randy Bachman left the Guess Who in 1971, and didn’t immediately form BTO.  Instead, he and Chad Allen formed Brave Belt with Rob Bachman.  When they were asked to tour, they added C.F. Turner.  It was in 1973 that Mercury signed them to a recording contract (just as they were about to throw in the towel).  Their initial lineup was Randy Bachman, C.F. Turner, and Tim and Robbie Bachman at which time they changed their name to Bachman Turner Overdrive.

Trifecta pulled it’s plug, Happy Hour rode back into town, bringing you the very best in bootleg concerts.  A few people might be interested in the software/plugins used, like Dave Ball of RadioDave.  Unfortunately, RadioDave has ceased operations, but I may try to convince him to take a run as a guest DJ at some point, if he’s agreeable to that.

The first segment of the broadcast was Golden Earring 75 Live Switch.  This concert was GoldenEarring-Winterland75-Frontrecorded in Winterland, San Francisco, California, right on the heels of their successful 1973 hit, Radar Love, from their Moontan album.

Golden Earring is a Dutch band, founded in 1961 by 13 and 15 year-old neighbors, George Kooymans and Rinus Gerritsen, respectively.  They had originally called the band The Tornadoes.  The band changed the name to The Golden Earrings when they discovered the other name was being used.  Finally, they adopted the present name in 1969.

GoldenEarring-Winterland75-NewBackThe present lineup has been the band’s lineup since 1970, however, other musicians have come and gone.  After they hit the US charts with Radar Love in 1973, they didn’t really resurface until 1982 with Twilight Zone.  The Golden Earring of the eighties was a band worth listening to, and I shall try to do a concert from that era sometime in the future.

 

The second segment of the broadcast was a 1998 bootleg album, Bon Scott Rarities……  BonScott - Rarities frontBon Scott (9 Jul 1946 – 19 Feb 1980) formed his first band, The Spektors, in 1964.  He was the drummer, and occasionally the lead vocalist.  Before replacing Dave Evans in 1974 as the lead singer of ACDC, he also performed in The Valentines and Fraternity.  He originally auditioned for the spot of drummer with ACDC, but was turned down because he was so small, only being 5’8″ or so.  His time with ACDC was rather short (only six years), but he helped rocket the band to worldwide stardom.

BonScott - Rarities backAfter his passing in early 1980, the band actually considered disbanding, but found Brian Johnson in the british glam rock band, Geordie.  The album, Back in Black was released a short five months after Scott’s death, and was touted as a tribute to Bon Scott.  In 2004, Classic Rock rated him as the number 1 in a list of the ‘100 Greatest Frontmen Of All Time’.  This bootleg contains rare Bon Scott ACDC tracks, from Australian-only releases, and early singles.

The third segment of the broadcast was Krokus 1984 Cobo Hall, Detroit, Michigan…..  Krokus was forment in 1975 and was Krokus - 84 Cobo Hall Detroit front initially a prog rock band.  It was the late seventies, when they heard ACDC live in concert, and decided to change their style to more closely match Bon Scott and ACDC.  Krokus’ first hit, Metal Rendez-vous was recorded and released in 1980 and was followed closely by the 1981 release, Hardware.  These two albums were both hits and provided the fuel with which the group launched into worldwide popularity which was about to happen.

Krokus - 84 Cobo Hall Detroit back1982’s release of One Vice at a Time managed to do what the other two albums set the stage for.  Chris Von Rohr, originally their drummer, and then their vocalist through the late seventies, described this album as “the album ACDC never made”.  The Cobo Hall concert bootleg is right on the heels of this success, and contains Long Stick Goes Boom,  American Woman as well as several of their other hits.
