ZZ Top – 1980.04.15 – Pine Knob, Clarkston, MI [SBD]

ZZ Top is a rock band formed in 1969 in Houston, Texas. The band has, since 1970, consisted of bassist and lead vocalist ZZ Top 0 - Front CoverDusty Hill, guitarist and lead vocalist Billy Gibbons (the band’s leader, main lyricist and musical arranger), and drummer Frank Beard. The band released its first album—called ZZ Top’s First Album—in 1971. Beginning with blues-inspired rock, the band incorporated new wave, punk rock and dance-rock by using synthesizers. The band is also known for its humorous lyrics laced with double entendres and innuendo. The original line-up was formed in Houston and consisted of Gibbons, organist Lanier Greig (died February 2013) and drummer Dan Mitchell. The name of the band was Gibbons’ idea. The band had a little apartment covered with concert posters and he noticed that many performers’ nZZ Top00 - Back Coverames utilized initials. Gibbons particularly noticed B.B. King and Z.Z. Hill and thought of combining the two into “ZZ King”, but considered it too similar to the original name. He then figured that “king is going at the top” which brought him to “ZZ Top”. In 1979, ZZ Top signed with Warner Bros. Records and released the album Degüello. While the album went platinum, it only reached no. 24 on the Billboard chart. The album produced two popular singles: “I Thank You“, a cover of a song recorded by Sam & Dave, and “Cheap Sunglasses“. The band remained a popular concert attraction and toured in support of Degüello. In April 1980, ZZ Top made their first appearance in Europe, performing for the German music television show Rockpalast.   It is right around that time that we catch ZZ Top in their element in Clarkston, MI.

BTO – 1984.09.24 – Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada [FM]

Bachman–Turner Overdrive, often abbreviated as BTO, is a Canadian rock group from Winnipeg, Manitoba, that had a series of hit albums and singles in the 1970s, selling over 7 million albums in that decade alone. BTO 00 - CoverTheir 1970s catalog included five Top 40 albums and six US Top 40 singles (ten in Canada). The original lineup consisted of Randy Bachman (lead guitar, lead vocals), Fred Turner (bass guitar, lead vocals), Tim Bachman (guitar, vocals) and Robbie Bachman (drums). This lineup released two albums in 1973. The second and most commercially successful lineup featured Blair Thornton (lead guitar), in place of Tim Bachman. After leaving The Guess Who at the height of that band’s success, Randy Bachman recalled being labelled “a lunatic and a loser” and that “nobody wanted to work with me.” The exception was Chad Allan, former Guess Who lead singer/keyboardist who had left that band four years before Randy. The two agreed to explore a musical project, and Randy then turned to family. The result was the band Brave Belt, formed in Winnipeg in 1971 BTO 00 - Back Coverwith the additions of Randy’s brother Robin “Robbie” Bachman on drums, and Gary Bachman acting as band manager. Brave Belt’s self-titled first album, which saw Randy playing both lead guitar and bass, did not sell particularly well. The record label still wanted Brave Belt to tour, so Randy (at the suggestion of Neil Young) hired fellow Winnipeg bassist/vocalist C.F. “Fred” Turner to perform in the band’s scheduled gigs. Turner was soon asked to be a full-time member and sing lead for the recording of Brave Belt II in 1972. After Reprise Records dropped Brave Belt from their label, Randy emptied his own bank account to finance another set of recordings, and began to shop around the next album. The band eventually landed a new record deal from Mercury Records, one which Randy Bachman proclaimed as a pure stroke of luck.  They changed their name to Bachman Turner Overdrive and rode the wave of popularity until they disbanded in 1979 and this bootleg catches them shortly after they reunited four years later.

Jeff Beck – 1999.03.21 – Oakdale Theater, Wallingford, CT [SBD]

Jeff  Beck (Geoffrey Arnold) is an English rock guitarist. He is one of the three noted guitarists to have played with The Yardbirds Jeff Beck Front Cover(the other two being Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page). Beck also formed The Jeff Beck Group and Beck, Bogert & Appice. Much of Beck’s recorded output has been instrumental, with a focus on innovative sound, and his releases have spanned genres ranging from blues rock, hard rock, jazz fusion, and an additional blend of guitar-rock and electronica. Although he recorded two hit albums (in 1975 and 1976) as a solo act, Beck has not established or maintained the sustained commercial success of many of his contemporaries and bandmates. He was ranked fifth in Rolling Stone‘s list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” and the magazine, upon whose cover Jeff Beck Back CoverBeck has appeared three times, has described him as “one of the most influential lead guitarists in rock”. He is often called a “guitarist’s guitarist”. Beck has earned wide critical praise and received the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance six times and Best Pop Instrumental Performance once. In 2014 he received the British Academy’s Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. Beck has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: as a member of the Yardbirds (1992) and as a solo artist (2009).  This soundboard bootleg catches Beck in 1999 at the Oakdale Theater in Wallingford, CT.

Deep Purple – 1993.10.19 – Le Zenith, Paris, France [SBD]

Deep Purple is an English rock band Deep Purple 93 Frontformed in 1968 in Hertford, England.  The band saw several lineup changes in the years before their eight year hiatus  from 1976-1984.  These lineups during the years 1968-1976 are commonly referred to as Mark I, II, III and IV.  Deep Purple were ranked 22nd on VH1’s Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.  They have been nominated in October 2012, and then again in October 2013 for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but weren’t voted in.  Deep Purple, along with Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath, have been referred to as “The unholy trinity of British hard rock and heavy metal in the Deep Purple 93 Backearly to mid-seventies”.  Their Mark II lineup was by far the most successful of their lineups.  This configuration was comprised of Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Ian Gillan (vocals), Jon Lord (organ), Roger Glover (bass), and Ian Paice (drums).  This concert is that lineup, several years after they reunited in 1985.  This membership has been the most stable in the band’s history, and after Jon Lord’s retirement in 2002, left Ian Paice as the band’s only original member.  Lord unfortunately passed away in July 2012 due to pancreatic cancer and a pulmonary embolism.

Pink Floyd – 1994.03.30 – Joe Robbie Stadium, Miami, FL [SBD]

Pink Floyd were an English rock band formed in London. They achieved international acclaim with their progressive and Pink Floyd 94 Front Coverpsychedelic music. Distinguished by their use of philosophical lyrics, sonic experimentation, extended compositions and elaborate live shows, they are one of the most commercially successful and influential groups in the history of popular music. Pink Floyd were founded in 1965 by students Syd Barrett on guitar and lead vocals, Nick Mason on drums, Roger Waters on bass and vocals, and Richard Wright on keyboards and vocals. They gained popularity performing in London’s underground music scene during the late 1960s, and under Barrett’s leadership released two charting singles and a successful debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967). Guitarist and vocalist David Gilmour joined in December 1967; Barrett left in April 1968 due to deteriorating mental health. Waters became the band’s Pink Floyd 94 Back Coverprimary lyricist and conceptual leader, devising the concepts behind their albums The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), The Wall (1979) and The Final Cut (1983). The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall became two of the best-selling albums of all time. Following creative tensions, Wright left Pink Floyd in 1979, followed by Waters in 1985. Gilmour and Mason continued as Pink Floyd; Wright rejoined them as a session musician and, later, a band member. The three produced two more albums: A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987) and The Division Bell (1994), and toured through 1994. This great quality bootleg catches them in the midst of The Division Bell US tour in 1994.

Kiss – 2000-06-27 – Continental Airlines Arena, East Rutherford, NJ [SBD]

Kiss 2000 Front CoverKiss  is an American rock band formed in New York City in January 1973 by Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Peter Criss and Ace Frehley. Well known for its members’ face paint and stage outfits, the group rose to prominence in the mid-to-late 1970s with their elaborate live performances, which featured fire breathing, blood-spitting, smoking guitars, shooting rockets, levitating drum kits, and pyrotechnics. The band has gone through several lineup changes, with Stanley and Simmons the only remaining original members. The original and best-known lineup consisted of Stanley (vocals and rhythm guitar), Simmons (vocals and bass guitar), Frehley (lead guitar and vocals) and Criss Kiss 2000 Back Cover(drums and vocals).  With their make-up and costumes, they took on the personae of comic book-style characters: The Starchild (Stanley), The Demon (Simmons), The Spaceman or Space Ace (Frehley) and The Catman (Criss). Due to creative differences, both Criss and Frehley had departed the group by 1982, but by this concert had all reunited.  This excellent soundboard bootleg finds Kiss at the Continental Airlines Arena in 2000.  This broadcast aired on Westwood One Absolutely Live In Concert, and was broadcast during the weekend of April 28/29, 2007.

The Who – 1973-12-04 – The Spectrum, Philadelphia, PA [SBD]

The Who are an English rock band that formed in 1964. Their classic line-up consisted of lead singer Roger Daltrey, guitarist and singer Pete Townshend, The Who 73 Front Coverbass guitarist John Entwistle, and drummer Keith Moon. They are considered one of the most influential rock bands of the 20th century, selling over 100 million records worldwide and holding a reputation for their live shows and studio work. The Who developed from an earlier group, The Detours, and established themselves as part of the pop art and mod movements, featuring auto-destructive art by destroying guitars and drums on stage. Their first single as the Who, “I Can’t Explain“, reached the UK top ten, followed by a string of singles including “My Generation“, “Substitute” and “Happy Jack“. In 1967, they performed at the Monterey Pop Festival and released the US top ten single “I Can See for Miles“, while touring extensively. The group’The Who 73 Back Covers fourth album, 1969’s rock opera Tommy, included the single “Pinball Wizard” and was a critical and commercial success. Live appearances at Woodstock and the Isle of Wight Festival, along with the live album Live at Leeds, cemented their reputation as a respected rock act. With their success came increased pressure on lead songwriter and visionary Townshend, and the follow-up to Tommy, Lifehouse, was abandoned. Songs from the project made up 1971’s Who’s Next, which included the hit “Won’t Get Fooled Again“. The group released the album Quadrophenia in 1973 as a celebration of their mod roots.  This is where we catch The Who, at The Spectrum, in Philadelphia, in a great soundboard bootleg.

Joe Satriani – 1988.06.11 – San Diego Sports Arena, San Diego, CA [SBD]

Joe Satriani was inspired to play guitar at age 14, after hearing of the death of Jimi Hendrix.  He has been said to have Satriani 00 Front Coverheard the news during football practice, where he then announced to his coach that he was quitting to become a guitarist.  In 1974, Satriani studied music with jazz guitarist Billy Bauer and with reclusive jazz pianist Lennie Tristano. The technically demanding Tristano greatly influenced Satriani’s playing.  Satriani began teaching guitar, with his most notable student at the time being fellow Long Island native Steve Vai (both also went to the same high school). While he was teaching Vai, he was attending Five Towns College for studies in music.  Satriani moved to Berkely in 1978, and soon after he started playing in a San Francisco-based band called The Squares, where he continued to network and make musical connections (Squares Satriani00 Back Coversound man John Cuniberti co-produced his second album). He was invited to join the Greg Kihn Band, who were on the downside of their career, but whose generosity helped Satriani pay off the overwhelming credit card debt from recording his first album Not of This Earth.  In 1987, Satriani’s second album Surfing with the Alien produced radio hits and was the first all-instrumental release to chart so highly in many years. The track “Crushing Day” was featured on the soundtrack of a low-budget film titled It Takes Two.  Surfing with the Alien is his most acclaimed work.  This great sounding soundboard bootleg, finds Satriani on the Surfing with the Alien tour in San Diego, CA.

Robin Trower – 1974.11.21 – Tower Theater, Philadelphia, PA [SBD]

Robin Trower  is an English rock guitarist 1974-11-21-Tower-of-Philadelphia-frontand vocalist who achieved success with Procol Harum during the 1960s, and then again as the bandleader of his own power trio.  Trower was born in Catford, London, but grew up in Southend-on-Sea, Essex. In 1962, he formed a group that became The Paramounts, later including Westcliff High School pupil Gary Brooker. The Paramounts disbanded in 1966 to pursue individual projects. During this time, Trower created a local three-piece band called The Jam (not to be confused with the later group with 1974-11-21-Tower-of-Philadelphia-backPaul Weller). Trower then joined Brooker’s new band Procol Harum following the success of their debut single “A Whiter Shade of Pale” in 1967, remaining with them until 1971 and appearing on Procol Harum‘s first five albums.  Trower retained Dewar as his bassist, who took on lead vocals as well, and recruited drummer Reg Isidore (later replaced by Bill Lordan) to form the Robin Trower Band in 1973.  Perhaps Trower’s most famous album is Bridge of Sighs (1974). That is where this soundboard bootleg finds them…. touring in support of Bridge of Sighs.

Van Halen – 1983.05.29 – US Festival, San Bernadino, CA [SBD]

Van Halen is an American hard rock band formed in Pasadena, California, in 1972. From 1974 until 1985, the band consisted of guitarist Eddie Van Halen, vocalist David Lee Roth, drummer Alex Van Halen, and bassist Michael AnthonyVanHalen Front CoverThe band went on to become major stars, and by the early 1980s they were one of the most successful rock acts of the time. Upon its release, Van Halen reached No. 19 on the Billboard pop music charts, one of rock’s most commercially successful debuts. It was highly regarded as both a heavy metal and hard rock album. The album included songs now regarded as Van Halen classics, like “Runnin’ with the Devil” and the guitar solo “Eruption“, which showcased Eddie’s use of a technique known as “finger-tapping”. The band toured for nearly a year, opening for Black Sabbath and establishing a reputation for their performances. The band’s chemistry owed much to Eddie Van Halen’s technical guitar wizardry and David Lee Roth’s flamboyant antics and stage persona, strong points which later made them rivals. The band returned to the studio in late 1978 to record Van Halen II, a 1979 album VanHalen Back Coversimilar in style to their debut. This record yielded the band’s first hit single, “Dance the Night Away.” Over the next few years, the band alternated album releases and touring. Their Women and Children First album was released in 1980 and further cemented Van Halen‘s status. But in 1981, during the recording of the Fair Warning album, tensions rose. Eddie’s desire for more serious and complex songs was at odds with Roth’s poppy style. Nonetheless, Roth (and producer Templeman) acquiesced to Eddie’s wishes. Diver Down performed better. The band then earned a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for the highest-paid single appearance of a band: $1.5 million for a 90-minute set at the 1983 US Festival, which is where we find them tonight.

Well, due to technical difficulties, my last podcast post has been the 2016.12.31 broadcast.  At some point, I hope to restore all those missing broadcasts…..

Joe Walsh & Barnstorm – 1973.09.24 – Univ. Texas at Arlington [SBD]

Barnstorm was the group created by Joe Walsh 00 Front CoverJoe Walsh in Colorado in 1972 after he left the James Gang. The original members of the group were Walsh (guitars, keyboards), Joe Vitale (drums, flute, keyboards) and Kenny Passarelli (bass).   Walsh and Vitale had previously played together in an Akron-based band called The Measles before Walsh joined the James Gang.  Later, the group added keyboardists Rocke Grace and Tommy Stephenson. Having two keyboardists permitted Barnstorm to play the complex arrangements live that it was creating through multitracking in the studio.  Joe Walsh 00 Back CoverBarnstorm would record only three albums over its three-year life (two as principals, Barnstorm and The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get, plus serving as the backing band on Michael Stanley‘s Friends and Legends).  Barnstorm thus disbanded in 1973, although Walsh and Vitale continued to work together on various projects over the next 20 years. Walsh continued to record as a solo artist; in 1975, Walsh joined the Eagles, produced by Bill Szymczyk, who had also produced Barnstorm.  This soundboard recording catches Barnstorm at its finest, in Sep 1973 at Univ. TX at Arlington.
